Introduction to the Protection of Personal Information Act

This two-hour introductory webinar aims to convey the essence of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) to Heads and other decision makers in independent schools. It provides a high-level overview of the Act which focuses on the requirements of POPIA, aspects of legal liability and risk, as well as understanding the processes that must be followed in order to achieve compliance.

The act has broad implications for schools in terms of their risk profile, governance, infrastructure and resources. As such ISASA strongly recommends that Heads and other senior management attend this introductory workshop this year.

The Information Officer is central to this process and is the person responsible to oversee compliance. This person can even attract personal liability for certain infractions.

It is worth noting that the Head of a School is the default Information Officer in terms of POPIA. However, Deputy Information Officers may be designated to fulfil these responsibilities in practice. In light of what is at stake, it is crucial that the person(s) fulfilling this role is/are capable and empowered to do so. As such the appointment of a suitable candidate should be carefully considered.

The webinar has been designed and customised for ISASA member schools by experienced legal consultants and covers the following topics:

  • Overview of POPIA
  • The compliance journey (process)
  • Legal liability and enforcement
  • The role and responsibilities of the Information Officer

POPIA compliance requires many processes and habitual practices. It is most certainly a marathon, not a sprint! Achieving compliance is an incremental process that will be time-consuming. It is therefore essential to start the journey as soon as possible and to plan for the necessary resources.

Facilitators: Judith Griessel and Pieter Griessel, both lawyers with extensive experience in the independent school sector.

Online Cost: TBC
