The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) monitors and regulates various lottery competitions, including those organised by non-profit organisations.
Schools often make use of raffles to raise supplemental funds. Schools should note that such raffles are also regulated by the NLC in terms of the Lotteries Act 57 of 1997.
The different categories of lotteries are:
- Lotteries incidental to Exempt Entertainment
- Private Lotteries
- Society Lotteries
- Part of the National Lottery
- Promotional Competitions
Schools could either fall in the category of lotteries incidental to exempt entertainment or that of society lotteries, depending on the value of the prizes to be won.
