The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) is a single and comprehensive document developed for all subjects listed in the National Curriculum Statement Grades R – 12. It replaced the various policy documents, such as the Subject Statements, Learning Programme Guidelines and Subject Assessment Guidelines.
According to the Department of Basic Education, CAPS has been commended for its clarity and sequence of content. However, some teachers have raised concerns about the complexity of implementing Section 4 of CAPS, which deals with formal and informal assessment activities.
In order to address these concerns, the DBE convened a team of subject specialists. The outcome of their work is a document titled The Guidelines to Strengthen CAPS – Implementation 2017.
The memorandum below discusses the implications of this document for independent schools.
