The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is considering an exit examination qualification at the end of Grade 9, which will be called the General Education and Training Certificate (GETC). The purpose of the GETC is to provide a qualification and a certificate to learners who may elect to exit schooling at Grade 9 to enter the world of work.
A concept paper that will explore a framework on this matter is still to be developed. No time frames have been set, but the DBE understands that this will take years to implement as there needs to be broad consultation with key stakeholders.
