The increase in the use and distribution of drugs, particularly among the youth, is a cause for concern for all parents. Young, aspirant sportsmen and women are also increasingly turning to performance-enhancing drugs to improve success in their fields of competition.
ISASA is grateful to St Stithians College for making available a pro forma policy and consent forms to address the issue of substance abuse and drug testing in independent schools.
ISASA recommends that any drug testing is implemented as part of a structured intervention or relapse prevention programme in an environment that is committed to safeguarding personal rights.
