A visitorship report by Mahlathi Zeph Khoza, St Stithians Boys’ College
Mathematics is a critical learning area that presents challenges to many learners and especially learners from historically disadvantaged schools. South Africa has performed dismally in international tests and often ranks last in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
According to the 2015 TIMMS results, Singapore, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Japan continue to outperform all participating countries in mathematics. What influences their excellent performance? What can South African schools learn from them?
To examine this question, I visited seven schools in Singapore, Hong Kong and Southern Africa.
