St Andrew’s College is seeking enthusiastic, responsible and suitably qualified tertiary students to join our boarding and co-curricular programme as College Student Stewards.
This is an excellent opportunity for a student registered at a recognised tertiary institution to gain valuable practical experience working with boys in a leading independent school environment, while developing skills in coaching, pastoral care, boarding, leadership and school-based support.
THE POSITION:
The Student Steward will contribute to the academic, sporting, pastoral and boarding life of St Andrew’s College. The role is particularly suited to a student who enjoys working with young people, has strong interpersonal skills, and is keen to contribute meaningfully to the sporting, co-curricular and boarding programmes of a vibrant school community.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing classroom cover as requested.
- Coaching and supporting pupils in the College’s sporting and co-curricular programme.
- Participating in approximately three practice sessions and one match per week in a coaching capacity.
- Participating in a weekly gym duty rotation.
- Assisting with library duties during examination periods.
- Undertaking one full day of boarding duty per week.
- Undertaking one full boarding weekend approximately every fourth weekend.
- Assisting with travel day duties, as required.
- Supporting the wider pastoral and co-curricular life of the College.
- Conducting themselves as positive role models for our pupils and contributing to a safe, supportive and purposeful school environment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must:
- Be currently registered at a recognised tertiary institution.
- Have a genuine interest in working with young people and contributing to a school environment.
- Demonstrate skill and competency in one or more sporting codes offered by St Andrew’s
- College, with the ability and willingness to coach and support pupils within the College’s sporting programme.
- Have an interest and/or experience in sport, coaching, leadership or extracurricular activities.
- Demonstrate maturity, reliability, initiative and good interpersonal skills.
- Be able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Have a willingness to participate fully in the boarding and co-curricular life of the College.
- Be willing to undergo the school’s required safeguarding and background vetting.
Previous experience working with children or young people, particularly in a coaching, tutoring, leadership, sporting or school environment, will be advantageous. Preference may be given to applicants who can demonstrate experience and competence in sporting codes offered by St Andrew’s College.
WHAT WE OFFER:
The successful candidate will receive:
- A one-year performance-based appointment.
- Single-room accommodation with shared bathroom facilities, including a cupboard, desk, chair, bedframebedframe and mattress.
- Meals in the dining hall when the kitchen is operational.
- Meal allowances for Rhodes University-registered students when the dining hall is closed but the Rhodes University undergraduate calendar remains in session, subject to the applicable arrangements.
- Reasonable branded clothing allocation with replacement of selected items at the school’s discretion.
- Weekly laundry service.
