PHYSICAL SCIENCES SUBJECT HEAD (with NATURAL SCIENCES)

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

This is a full-time position requiring the successful candidate to teach Natural Sciences (Grades 8–9) and Physical Sciences (Grades 8–12) and to run the department.

PLEASE NOTE THAT CONSIDERATION WILL ONLY BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH:

  • An appropriate university degree and professional qualification in Physical Sciences with Natural Sciences (PGCE senior and FET phase only);
  • A minimum of 7-10 years’ experience teaching Natural Sciences (Grades 8–9) and Physical Sciences (Grades 10–12)
  • The ability to teach Further Studies Chemistry;
  • Preference will be given to an educator with previous experience as an HOD in an IEB school;
  • Preference will be given to an IEB educator;
  • Commitment and passion for Natural Sciences and Physical Sciences;
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills;
  • Excellent IT skills;
  • A genuine interest in, and concern for, young people;
  • The ability to work closely and co-operatively with colleagues;
  • A proactive, dynamic and motivated approach to education;
  • The ability to uphold the Christian ethos and values of the school.

IEB marking experience would be beneficial.

It would be an advantage to have experience as a matric marker, especially IEB.

JOB PROFILE:

Teaching

1.1 To oversee the running of the department, including the drawing of the budget, IEB marks analysis and year planner;
1.2 To be responsible for the preparation and compilation of a grade’s work, the setting of tests and examinations within the framework of the planned programme for Grades 8 to 12;
1.3 Set innovative tasks, practical work, tests, examinations and alternative assessments;
1.4 Have an excellent understanding of the IEB SAGS / CAPS document and the implementation thereof;
1.5 Have excellent knowledge of, and experience in, teaching Natural Sciences from Grades 8–9 and Physical Sciences from Grades 10–12.
1.6 The ability to teach and work with mixed-ability classes;
1.7 Integrate technology in teaching;
1.8 Provide academic support to pupils within the department through extra lessons and tutorials;
1.9 Involve the pupils in extension activities which build a love and greater appreciation for the subject.

Academic Related Responsibilities

2.1 The departmental administration appropriate to a Subject Head of Physical Sciences, including budgeting;
2.2 Meet with Academic HOD responsible for this subject on a regular basis;
2.3 Attend weekly staff meetings;
2.4 Attend departmental meetings;
2.5 Participate in staff development;
2.6 Attend IEB conferences, clusters and workshops;
2.7 Volunteer for IEB NSC marking and moderation;
2.8 Attend parent-teacher meetings;
2.9 Be a tutor teacher;
2.10 Participate in the normal operational duties within the school.

Involvement in the School

3.1 Become involved in the co-curricular life of the school as is required, including open days and other such events;
3.2 Attend chapel and assembly;
3.3 Provide appropriate role modelling and pastoral support to pupils;
3.4 Exhibit professional behaviour at all times.
