The successful candidate will be based at Ubuntu School in Zwide, Gqeberha, and will report directly to the School Principal. The position will commence in January 2027. Working hours are from 07:30 to 16:15, Monday to Thursday, and from 07:30 to 12:30 on Fridays.

Position Overview

The Physical Education Teacher (Part-Time) delivers Physical Education instruction across Grade 1 to Grade 9, working two days per week as a subject specialist within Ubuntu School’s Primary School. The role gives learners across the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior Primary phases dedicated, safe and well-structured physical activity, supporting the school’s holistic education programme while freeing class and subject teachers to focus on core academic instruction.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver Physical Education lessons to assigned classes from Grade 1 to Grade 9, in line with the CAPS Life Skills Physical Education strand and the school’s holistic education approach.
  • Differentiate instruction and activities appropriately across the full Grade 1–9 age, size and ability range, ensuring safe and age-appropriate progression of movement skills.
  • Plan a sequence of units and activities over the year such as gross motor skills, games, athletics and team sports that build learners’ physical competence, teamwork and enjoyment of movement, and that can flex around the school’s timetable and available contact time.
  • Conduct risk assessments and safety checks of equipment, playing areas and activities before each lesson, and respond appropriately to injuries or incidents during PE lessons, including basic first aid and the school’s incident-reporting procedures.
  • Maintain PE equipment and flag replenishment or repair needs to the school.
  • Coordinate with class and register teachers to align PE activities with SEL, PBL and whole-school wellbeing themes where relevant.
  • Support, and where capacity allows, help coordinate school sports days, fixtures and extramural activities that draw on the PE programme.
  • Assess learner participation and progress in Physical Education and provide input into progress reports.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behaviour needed to achieve a positive and safe learning atmosphere during PE lessons.
  • Create a clean, organised and safe environment conducive to student learning, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Follow the Effective Teaching Standards set by Ubuntu School and participate in Professional Learning Communities and staff meetings to the extent reasonable for a part-time role.
  • Maintain records and required information securely; maintain confidentiality of all student information.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, Sport Science, Human Movement Science, or a related field.
  • A formal teaching qualification is preferred; candidates with strong coaching or sport-science backgrounds and SACE eligibility will also be considered.
  • SACE Certificate (or eligibility to register).
  • Strong classroom and outdoor/field management skills suited to a specialist, itinerant teaching role across several grades.
  • Ability to plan safe, age-appropriate physical activities across a wide age range and limited weekly
    contact time.
  • Current First Aid certification required, or willingness to obtain before the start date.
  • Knowledge of the CAPS Life Skills Physical Education requirements across the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior Phases, and of basic safety protocols for school sport.

The following will be advantageous

  • Experience teaching or coaching Physical Education/sport with primary-aged learners preferred.
  • Experience working across multiple grade levels or age groups advantageous.
  • Experience in a school setting preferred, though candidates with a strong club, community or sport-coaching background will also be considered.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills in English; isiXhosa advantageous.
