Intermediate Phase Subject Head: Sciences & STEAM

The King’s College & Preparatory School Bryanston is looking to appoint an Intermediate Phase Subject Head for Sciences and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). The individual needs to be a visionary, innovative, and passionate leader who specializes in Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), specifically applying it to the social and natural sciences. The ideal candidate will be an experienced educator with a passion for STEAM, a proven track record of designing integrated IBL curricula and mentoring staff to engage successfully with learners.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Qualities:
The King’s College, Bryanston, is looking for candidates who:
- Align with the foundational values of the school’s Christian principles.
- Have an appropriate teaching qualification and are registered with SACE.
- Have experience in a subject head or curriculum design position (ISASA school and IEB curriculum experience will be advantageous).
- Assume full Subject Head responsibilities for Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and STEAM within the Intermediate Phase.
- Demonstrate a deep pedagogical understanding of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and the ability to oversee and integrate the IBL approach across Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and STEAM in the Intermediate Phase.
- Show the capability to support and guide Grade 4 and 5 teachers within a fully integrated class teaching model, where learners have core subjects combined with intentional blocks of cross-disciplinary IBL units.
- Show the capability to support Grade 6 and 7 teachers within a timetabled, subject-split model to incorporate rich IBL units within their specific subjects successfully.
- Are passionate about planning, mentoring, and providing robust teacher support for IBL implementation across the entire Intermediate Phase.
- Are eager to actively teach units of inquiry and directly develop essential STEAM skills in learners to support those units.
- Demonstrate the ability to coach, mentor, and inspire classroom teachers in progressive teaching methods.
- Have experience managing creative learning environments (e.g., STEAM, Maker Space, or Innovation Labs).
- Have a strong set of teaching and leadership skills.
- Have strong communication skills – written, verbal, presentation, and training.
- Possess a collaborative, cooperative, and patient mindset.
- Have a willingness to participate fully in the extracurricular programme and all school activities.
