An exciting opportunity exists for a Head to lead St Martin’s into a new chapter of the school’s history. The school has re-engineered and re-imagined itself in the independent education sector and is seeking to appoint an energetic Head to lead and drive the vision forward in this exciting phase. Both the Preparatory and High School will be accommodated on one campus and therefore the Head will have responsibility and oversight of the senior grades (Grade 8 to 12) and the Preparatory School (Grade 000 to 7).

St Martin’s School, located in The Hill, Johannesburg, is an independent co-educational Anglican school. The school has a rich heritage, and many prominent South Africans walked its corridors. This great legacy will be carried forward for a new generation of young people to continue.

St Martin’s is a member of ISASA and offers the IEB curriculum.

Required Competencies

  • Excellent communication, planning, organising and reporting skills
  • Strategic thinking, time management and problem-solving skills
  • An ability to listen, negotiate and resolve conflict when it arises
  • A good understanding of the business of an independent school
  • Excellent technical skills
  • Sound financial competencies
  • Experience in marketing in the private school sector

Required Education Experience

  • A relevant professional qualification. An Honours degree in Education would be advantageous.
  • Several years’ experience as the Head of a high school. Some experience in the prep school arena would certainly be an advantage.
  • A member of SACE.
  • Fluent in English and at least one other South African language.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of teaching, learning and the application of 21st century practices in education.
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • An ability to develop synergies between Preparatory and High School


  • Follows the Christian faith
  • Demonstrates effective leadership at a senior management level in a school environment
  • Has the skills and emotional strength to manage and lead a motivated staff
  • Is able to effectively deal with a crisis and celebrate success
  • Understands the regulatory and policy framework within which a school operates in South Africa

Working with the school governing council to drive the vision of the school forward will be an important part of this job, as well as maintaining and strengthening good relationships with all stakeholders

Commencement Date: January 2023 or as soon thereafter as possible.
