HEAD OF HOCKEY
Commencement Date: January 2027.
A senior leadership opportunity to take Redhill Hockey to the next level
Over the past decade, Redhill School has grown into a highly competitive hockey school, with a rapidly developing programme, talented players, committed coaches and outstanding sporting facilities.
We are now looking for an exceptional, experienced and ambitious Head of Hockey to lead the next chapter of that journey.
This is a significant senior sporting appointment at Redhill. We are looking for far more than an outstanding coach. We want a leader, strategist and builder of programmes who can take responsibility for the vision, culture, development and performance of hockey across the school and establish Redhill amongst the leading school hockey programmes in South Africa.
The successful candidate will inherit a strong foundation from which to build, including excellent hockey facilities and access to Redhill’s High Performance Centre, providing the opportunity to integrate coaching, strength and conditioning, athletic development and performance analysis into a comprehensive hockey programme.
THE ROLE
The Head of Hockey will provide strategic and operational leadership for hockey across Redhill School and will be responsible for developing a clear pathway from our youngest players through to our senior First Teams.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Develop and implement a compelling long-term vision and strategy for Redhill Hockey.
- Lead the continued development of hockey into a high-performance programme while maintaining opportunities for participation and development at all levels.
- Take overall responsibility for the quality, consistency and philosophy of hockey coaching across the school.
- Lead, mentor and develop Redhill’s hockey coaching staff.
- Recruit and retain outstanding coaches and ensure that every team benefits from high-quality coaching.
- Establish clear player-development pathways from Junior School through to Senior School.
- Identify and nurture talented players and create opportunities for them to reach their full potential.
- Work closely with the High Performance Centre to integrate strength and conditioning, athletic development, injury prevention and performance programmes into hockey.
- Drive excellence within Redhill’s senior hockey programme and First Teams.
- Develop appropriate pre-season, in-season and off-season programmes.
- Build a strong and distinctive hockey culture based on commitment, teamwork, excellence and pride in representing Redhill.
- Oversee team structures, coaching allocations, trials, selection processes, fixtures, tours and tournaments in collaboration with the wider Sports Department.
- Build strong relationships with players, coaches, parents, schools, clubs and the broader South African hockey community.
- Remain abreast of developments in modern hockey coaching, player development and high-performance sport.
- Contribute as a senior member of Redhill’s broader sporting leadership team.
THE PERSON WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for someone with significant hockey expertise and leadership experience who has the ambition and ability to build an exceptional school hockey programme.
The successful candidate should:
- Have substantial experience coaching hockey at a high level.
- Have demonstrated experience leading and developing coaches, players and sporting programmes.
- Hold appropriate and recognised hockey coaching qualifications.
- Have an excellent technical and tactical understanding of the modern game.
- Understand long-term athlete development and the progression of young players through different stages of their hockey development.
- Have the ability to inspire both elite players and those who are still developing their skills.
- Be an exceptional communicator who can build strong relationships with students, staff, coaches and parents.
- Bring energy, professionalism, ambition and positivity to the programme.
- Be highly organised and able to manage a complex school-wide sporting programme.
- Be passionate about developing young people through sport and understand that success is measured not only through results, but through the culture and character of the programme.
TEACHING AND PHE
While this is primarily a senior hockey leadership position, preference will be given to candidates who are SACE registered and appropriately qualified and willing to teach as part of Redhill’s Physical and Health Education (PHE) Department.
We believe there is considerable value in having our senior sporting leaders fully integrated into the academic and daily life of the school.
However, not being SACE registered will not disqualify an exceptional candidate. We are equally interested in hearing from outstanding hockey professionals who have the experience, leadership ability and vision to transform and further develop our hockey programme.
TAKING REDHILL HOCKEY TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Redhill is not looking to start a hockey programme. We already have one.
Over the past decade, hockey at Redhill has grown significantly in both participation and competitiveness. We have invested in our people, our facilities and our broader sporting infrastructure, including the development of a High Performance Centre designed to support the athletic development of our students.
We are now ready for the next step.
We are looking for a Head of Hockey who can take what has already been built and ask: What could Redhill Hockey become?
We want someone with the experience to recognise the strength of the existing programme, the ambition to challenge it to become better and the leadership ability to bring players, coaches and the wider Redhill community with them on that journey.
For the right person, this is an opportunity to shape and lead one of Redhill’s flagship sporting programmes and build something exceptional.
Please forward a Letter of Application and a full Curriculum Vitae, together with proof of SACE registration, and the names and telephone numbers of three referees, to:
