St Alban’s College, one of South Africa’s leading independent boys’ high schools, seeks an experienced and creative senior teacher to lead our Sepedi Department, which offers Sepedi at First Additional Language level. The Head of Department will grow boys’ confidence and pride in Sepedi as a living language, deepen their engagement with its literature and culture, and maintain a high standard of teaching and achievement.

The ideal candidate will be a specialist Sepedi teacher who is well established in the IEB environment and has a proven and successful track record of teaching Sepedi First Additional Language up to Grade 12.

The role:

  • Lead the Sepedi First Additional Language curriculum from Grade 8 to Grade 12, including planning, assessment design, internal moderation and preparation for the IEB examinations and external moderation, reporting to the Deputy Head: Academics.
  • Teach Sepedi with energy and high expectations, developing boys’ reading, writing, oral and literary skills as additional-language learners, and supporting boys who arrive with different levels of proficiency in the language.
  • Mentor, develop and appraise members of the department, and manage its resources, budget and administration.
  • Monitor boys’ progress and assessment results, identify trends early and coordinate timely support, extension and intervention.
  • Make Sepedi visible and valued in the life of the College through enrichment such as debating, public speaking, poetry, cultural and Heritage Day celebrations, and partnerships with universities and language and cultural organisations.
  • Engage proactively with parents and other stakeholders, helping families understand language pathways, assessment expectations and how they can support their sons’ learning at home.

Criteria:

  • At least 5 years of experience teaching IEB Sepedi First Additional Language from Grade 8 to Grade 12, with a strong record of results at matric level.
  • Experience as an IEB Sepedi First Additional Language matric marker. Experience as an IEB moderator or examiner will be an advantage.
  • A relevant degree with Sepedi as a major subject, and current SACE registration.
  • Leadership or management experience, with evidence of developing colleagues. Experience as a Head of Department or subject head will be an advantage.
  • An excellent command of Sepedi and sound knowledge of current trends in Sepedi literature and additional-language teaching.
  • Teach creatively and integrate technology innovatively into teaching and learning (essential), with competence on both Google and Microsoft platforms, and develop members of the department to do the same.
  • A passion for education and the desire to motivate boys and stimulate higher-order thinking, with a practical, boy-centric approach to the subject.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and sound classroom management.
  • Be prepared to uphold the core values and Anglican ethos of the College.
  • A willingness to become fully involved in the life of the College; a contribution to the co-curricular programme will be an advantage.
  • South African citizenship or a valid work permit.
  • Evidence of clearance from the National Child Protection Register (Children’s Act 38 of 2005) and the National Register for Sex Offenders (Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act 32 of 2007) before assuming the position.
