New Hanover Preparatory School is a co-educational, independent preparatory school, offering an innovative and relevant education to children from Grade RRR to Grade 7, in a country setting, approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Pietermaritzburg. New Hanover Prep is steeped in a rich heritage of over 165 years of Christian-based education and boasts strong core values based on personal development, community, integrity and belonging.

We are seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, suitably qualified and experienced leader (with at least 5 years of management experience) to lead our school. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with a passionate staff compliment, supportive School Board and Parent Committee in a satisfying and stimulating environment.

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be committed to upholding the values which are foundational to the school and provide leadership that reflects and enhances these values.
  • Demonstrate strong, dynamic leadership capabilities with the necessary vision of leading a well- established preparatory school.
  • Have appropriate academic and professional qualifications and be registered with SACE.
  • Be passionate about pre-primary and primary school education, creative, self-motivated, organised and energetic.
  • Have good interpersonal, administrative and organisational skills together with an understanding of school finances.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the curriculum and CAPS and be familiar with current trends in education, both local and international.
  • Be prepared to involve themself in all aspects of school life (leadership, management, teaching and coaching etc.).
  • Have a proven track record in leadership and social and community responsibility.
  • Be in possession of a valid Police Clearance Certificate.


  • Leading, overseeing and managing NHPS staff and school operations.
  • Collaborating in the setting of annual budgets, periodic review of management accounts.
  • Employing staff together with performance management.
  • Allocating staff responsibilities, timetables and overall well-being.
  • Teaching various subjects throughout the Senior Primary.
  • Partnering with the School Board in the formulation and implementation of the overall NHPS strategic plan to ensure alignment throughout the school.
  • Implementing and revising the School’s constitution, policies, rules and regulations.
  • Ensuring legal compliance for all school activities and protocols.
  • Creating harmonious relationships between staff, learners and all stakeholders of the School.
  • Ensuring effective teaching and learning for the effective development of all learners.
  • Providing for relevant and appropriate extra-mural activities.
  • Promoting the continuous pursuit of academic excellence, balanced with other pursuits.
  • Fostering educational innovation and improvement.
  • Preparing the management accounts, together with the Bursar, and ensuring they are made available.
  • Providing a high standard of pastoral well-being in the School.
  • Planning for and providing relevant facilities and equipment in line with the School’s mission.
  • Providing for the maintenance of buildings, campus, facilities and equipment.
  • Ensuring a healthy, safe and secure working, teaching and learning environment.
  • Recommending enrolment objectives and managing the enrolment process in the School.
  • Ensuring dynamic and effective marketing of the School to ensure positive public relations.
  • Fostering, initiating and maintaining positive and constructive relationships with relevant stakeholders.
  • Planning and implementing strategies for parent input and involvement at the School.
  • Encouraging and supporting community involvement and service.
