Organisational Description

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (The Academy) is a world-class educational platform for girls that is aimed at nurturing a new generation of dynamic women leaders. This residential boarding school is situated in Meyerton, Gauteng Province, with just over 300 students enrolled in Grades 8 -12. Grade 12. Students write the Independent Examination Board (I.E.B.) NSC Examination.

Purpose of the job

  • To provide high-quality financial management information and advice to the Academy stakeholders;
  • To drive the effective and efficient utilisation of the Academy’s resources by ensuring that the best value for money is achieved from all procurement;
  • To consistently enforce compliance with finance processes, procedures and controls;
  • To provide ongoing guidance and skills development to junior staff within the finance department.

Minimum academic requirements and experience

  • Matric;
  • A 3-year Degree in Commerce, majoring in Accounting or Financial Management;
  • A minimum of five to seven years’ experience in financial accounting, with demonstrable strength in financial recording & reporting and procurement;

Added Advantage

  • Intermediate to advanced level experience with financial accounting software;
  • Experience in a learning environment;
  • A relevant post graduate qualification.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the Finance Manager in implementing financial strategy, maintaining finance policies and procedures, and planning for future operational needs.
  • Assist with the preparation and management of the Academy’s budget, ensuring compliance with approved financial plans.
  • Monitor monthly financial performance, manage budget variances and queries, oversee asset and payment administration, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare and submit compliance and funding reports and applications, ensuring adherence to organisational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee procurement to ensure value for money, budget compliance, and adherence to procurement policies and procedures.
  • Act as the Finance Manager’s delegate when required and provide guidance to finance and asset management staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitude

  • Sound knowledge of financial management policies, procedures and controls;
  • Sound knowledge of procurement and bidding processes;
  • Strong understanding of accounting technical principles and application;
  • Team player with very strong interpersonal and communication skills,
  • Excellent attention to quality, accuracy and thoroughness;
  • Ability to be assertive in maintaining the Academy’s policies and protocols;
  • Reliable, conscientious, professional with bias toward collaboration;
  • Ability to work independently, take proactive decisions within scope of decision making;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines;
  • Demonstrated experience in multitasking and managing priorities;
  • Advanced computer literacy skills;
  • Take responsibility and accountability for professional development;
  • Willingness to participate in the broader life of the Academy and to contribute positively to the ethos of the school;
