Founded in 1987, Musikili Primary School is a leading independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils from Grade R to Grade 7. Situated in Mazabuka, Zambia, Musikili offers a welcoming and stimulating learning environment in which academic learning, sport, culture, character and community life work together.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced, passionate and inspirational Director of Sport to provide strategic and operational leadership for the school’s full sports programme. This visible, hands-on role calls for an accomplished educator and sports practitioner who can inspire pupils, develop coaches, manage complex logistics and build a culture of participation, excellence, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Key Responsibilities
- Programme leadership. Develop, implement and continually improve a coherent sports strategy and curriculum aligned with the school’s vision, values and educational goals.
- People development. Lead, allocate, mentor and evaluate coaching and support staff, promoting sound, age-appropriate coaching practice and professional growth.
- Pupil opportunity and performance. Provide inclusive sporting opportunities across ages and abilities while overseeing selection, training, conditioning and feedback with fairness and attention to individual needs.
- Fixtures, events and tours. Coordinate inter-school fixtures, festivals, tournaments, sports days and tours, including team lists, transport, accommodation, officiating, regulatory documentation and communication.
- Facilities, resources and finance. Manage budgets, equipment, inventories, procurement, maintenance and facilities responsibly so that sporting environments remain safe, functional and well resourced.
- Governance and safeguarding. Ensure compliance with school policies, governing-body regulations, eligibility rules, health and safety standards, and pupil-welfare expectations.
- Relationships and representation. Build constructive partnerships with pupils, staff, parents, ISAZ schools, ISASA schools, international counterparts, local clubs, governing bodies, alumni, sponsors and the wider community.
- Whole-school contribution. Teach an appropriate subject within the academic curriculum and contribute actively to extra-curricular, enrichment and boarding-school life.
The Successful Candidate
The successful candidate will combine educational credibility with broad sporting knowledge, strong administration and a genuine commitment to the holistic development of primary-aged children.
Qualifications, Experience and Attributes
- A Bachelor of Education, relevant sports degree, or an undergraduate degree supported by a recognised postgraduate teaching qualification.
- Current registration with a recognised teaching council, such as SACE or an equivalent professional body.
- Proven experience as a Director of Sport, Sports Coordinator, Head of Sport or in a comparable school leadership role.
- The ability and appropriate qualification to teach within the school’s academic curriculum; at least two years of successful classroom teaching experience is preferred.
- Broad knowledge of primary-school sport, child development and age-appropriate coaching, with a proven coaching record in traditional school sports, particularly cricket, tennis, rugby or netball.
- Demonstrated competence in planning sports programmes, fixtures, major events and tours, together with experience in budgeting, reporting, staff development and the responsible management of facilities and resources.
- Strong digital proficiency, including confident use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, online communication tools, Google Drive and relevant team-management or scheduling platforms.
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and presentation skills, with the confidence to communicate clearly with pupils, colleagues, parents and partners.
- A highly organised, adaptable and collaborative leadership style, supported by emotional intelligence, sound judgement, self-motivation, integrity and the ability to build trust and effective teams.
- The flexibility to fulfil the demands of school sport, including commitments outside normal school hours and on selected evenings and weekends.
Additional Advantages
- A postgraduate qualification in Education or Sports Management.
- Recognised coaching or teaching qualifications in one or more school sports.
- Current first-aid and safeguarding certification.
- Experience in sports development, promotion, marketing or community partnerships.
