The successful candidate will be based at Ubuntu School in Zwide, Gqeberha, and will report directly to the School Principal. The position will commence in January 2027. Working hours are from 07:30 to 16:15, Monday to Thursday, and from 07:30 to 12:30 on Fridays.
The position
The Creative Arts Teacher (Part-Time) delivers Creative Arts instruction across Grade 1 to Grade 7, working two days per week as a subject specialist within Ubuntu School’s Primary School. The role gives learners across the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior Primary phases dedicated, high-quality arts education in a progressive educational environment.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver Creative Arts lessons which may include visual arts, music, drama and dance to assigned classes from Grade 1 to Grade 7.
- Differentiate instruction appropriately across the full Grade 1–9 age and skill range, adjusting projects and techniques to suit each phase.
- Plan a sequence of projects and units over the year that build learners’ creative, technical and expressive skills, and that can flex around the school’s timetable and available contact time.
- Maintain a safe, organised and well-resourced teaching space, whether in a dedicated art area or a standard classroom.
- Coordinate with class and register teachers to align Creative Arts projects with cross-curricular and Project-Based Learning themes where relevant.
- Display and celebrate learner work to support a positive creative culture across the school.
- Support whole-school events, celebrations and showcases that draw on the Creative Arts programme, such as concerts, art displays and cultural days.
- Assess learner progress in Creative Arts and provide input into progress reports.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, Fine Art, or a related creative discipline.
- A formal teaching qualification is preferred; candidates with strong arts expertise and SACE eligibility will also be considered.
- SACE Certificate (or eligibility to register).
- Strong classroom management skills suited to a specialist, itinerant teaching role across several grades.
- Creative, adaptable lesson planning suited to a wide age range and limited weekly contact time.
- Exemplary written and oral communication skills in English; isiXhosa advantageous.
- Knowledge of the CAPS Life Skills (Creative Arts) and Creative Arts curricula across the Foundation,
Intermediate and Senior Phases.
The following will be advantageous
- Experience teaching or facilitating Creative Arts/Art & Culture with primary-aged learners preferred.
- Experience working across multiple grade levels or age groups advantageous.
- Experience in a school setting preferred, though candidates with a strong studio, community or arts-education background will also be considered.
