The National Minimum Wage Act and Changes to the Minimum Wage

On 27 November 2018, the National Minimum Wage Act 9 of 2018 was assented to by President Cyril Ramaphosa and came into effect on 1 January 2019. The national minimum wage is determined by the Minister of Employment and Labour in terms of the Act.

On 1 March 2020, the Minister of Employment and Labour announced changes to the national minimum wage. In addition to the standard minimum wage, changes have also been made to minimum wages for domestic workers and those employed on the expanded public works programme.

The ISASA policy unit has compiled a memorandum that outlines these changes and the implications for independent schools. The memorandum is available for download below.
