Full-Time High School English Teacher

Years 7–9 | Key Stage 3

Commencing January 2027

The International School of Cape Town is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic and student-centred English teacher to join our high school team. The successful candidate will teach English to students in Years 7–9 (Key Stage 3).

We are looking for a teacher who is passionate about English, genuinely enjoys working with teenagers and can create engaging, stimulating lessons that inspire students to read, write, think critically and communicate confidently.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach English Language and Literature across Years 7–9.
• Plan and deliver engaging, appropriately challenging and student-centred lessons.
• Develop students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical-thinking skills.
• Contribute to curriculum planning and development in alignment with the school’s academic standards.
• Use a range of teaching approaches to support different learning needs and abilities.
• Assess student progress effectively and provide constructive, timely feedback.
• Maintain accurate records and complete reporting and administrative requirements.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues through shared planning, moderation and professional development.
• Build positive relationships with students, parents and colleagues.
• Contribute actively to the school’s extracurricular programme and wider school activities.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

• A relevant bachelor’s degree with English as a major and a recognised teaching qualification, or a Bachelor of Education degree with an appropriate English specialisation.
• Current full SACE registration and good professional standing.
• Three to five years’ recent experience teaching English within a UK-based or UK-aligned curriculum.
• Experience teaching students in Years 7–9 or at Key Stage 3 level.
• Sound knowledge of curriculum planning, assessment, moderation and reporting.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organisational and technology skills.
• A willingness to contribute to the school’s extracurricular programme and wider activities.

Advantageous

• Experience teaching the Cambridge Lower Secondary English curriculum.
• Experience working in an international school environment.
• Cambridge International professional development or subject-specific training.
• Experience supporting students with a range of learning needs and abilities.

Mandatory Application Documents

• A police criminal-record clearance issued within the preceding six months by the country of current or most recent employment.
• Certified copies of all relevant academic and teaching qualifications.
• A current permanent SACE registration certificate reflecting the registration number.
• A colour copy of an identity document or passport is required.
• For non-South African citizens, a valid work visa authorising employment at ISCT.

These requirements are non-negotiable. Incomplete applications will not be shortlisted, and all submitted documents, qualifications and registrations will be verified.

Pre-interview Requirements

Before an interview is confirmed, ISCT will conduct employment and reference checks with the applicant’s current or most recent direct supervisor and a previous direct supervisor. Referees may not be related to the applicant. Only candidates whose employment history and references are satisfactorily verified will proceed to interview.

Pre-employment Requirements

Before an appointment is finalised, the preferred candidate must provide:

• National Register for Sex Offenders and Child Protection Register clearances.
• Proof of current residential address.
• A South African Revenue Service personal income tax number.
• Full disclosure of any relevant or material information that may reasonably affect ISCT’s appointment decision.
• Any additional documentation reasonably required for safeguarding, verification and onboarding.

No appointment will be finalised until all safeguarding and pre-employment requirements have been satisfactorily met.

ISCT reserves the right not to fill the position. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Applicants who have not received a response within 15 working days after the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful.

ISCT will process applicants’ personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act for recruitment, selection, verification and reporting purposes. Reasonable measures will be taken to maintain confidentiality, and application records will be securely destroyed after six months, subject to applicable legal or operational retention requirements.
