Position Overview

AISJ is dedicated to providing a student-centered, collaborative, and transdisciplinary approach to learning. Such an approach will best prepare and empower students to become responsible lifelong learners and competent, compassionate individuals. Elementary school teachers will have a strong understanding of best practices including a familiarity with learning sciences. AISJ is a school committed to improved justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion for all. AISJ bases its instruction in conceptual, connected and personalized learning.

The grade level teacher is responsible for creating a positive and flexible elementary classroom that promotes learning including personal growth. He/she establishes an effective rapport with students and develops positive relationships with AISJ community members. The grade level teacher motivates students to develop skills, concepts and knowledge as well as to develop understandings. He/she incorporates AISJ’s curriculum into the daily schedule and works collaboratively with colleagues to develop an effective grade level team. The grade level teacher will also collaborate with learning support teachers and specialist teachers to plan integrated units and activities, analyze student learning, and moderate student work to promote the educational needs of students. The grade level teacher will have a strong understanding of best practices, particularly in literacy and numeracy instruction and be familiar with a balanced literacy approach to learning. Qualifications

  • Appropriate elementary teaching certification with at least a four-year degree in education
  • Master’s degree or similar preferred
  • A minimum of three years teaching experience, preferably in international school settings
  • A willingness and ability to reflect and critically examine teaching practices and set goals
  • Commitment to continuous professional growth

Preferred skills and Experience

  • Experience in curriculum and assessment development
  • Expertise in building an active, collaborative, inquiry-driven classroom which encourages conceptual learning, problem solving, critical thinking skills, and which develops a sense of classroom community and trust
  • Previous teaching experience, and strong knowledge in the area of mathematics and balanced literacy
  • An ability to positively inspire elementary school students
  • A positive community member and a committed team player
  • Deep understanding of the developmental needs of elementary school students
  • A solid understanding of an elementary school organization, programs and students
  • A proven ability to differentiate instruction to meet individual needs and integrate conceptual, personalized and connected learning
  • Understanding of a wide range of assessment tools and strategies
  • Experience in integrating technology
  • Recent and relevant professional development in mathematics, balanced literacy, and knowledge and experience of learning sciences

Responsibilities

  • In addition to the grade level expectations, teachers at AISJ are welcomed into a collegial and collaborative working environment. In support of this, teachers are expected to:
  • Communicate and liaise on a regular basis with fellow team department/grade members with regards to planning, assessment, parent and community contact, subject organization and creating healthy classroom environments
  • Communicate and liaise with other school colleagues in an effort to promote and establish integrative alignment and/or awareness
  • In addition to the grade level responsibilities, teachers at AISJ are welcomed into a collegial and collaborative working environment
  • In support of this teachers are expected to:
  • Communicate and liaise on a regular basis with fellow department/grade members with regard to planning, assessment, parent and community contact, subject organization and classroom management, expectations and routines
  • Communicate and liaise with other school colleagues in an effort to promote and establish integrative learning
  • Take an active role in positive behavior management strategies
  • Attend and constructively contribute in meetings
  • Lead at least one co-curricular after school activities
  • Assist in supervision of student for the safety and wellbeing of all
  • Coordinate class activities as deemed necessary
  • Contribute to and support school improvement action plans and initiatives
  • Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parents
  • Establish regular links with our parent community to ensure that parents are kept well informed about student progress
  • Act as a resource/contact/support for new staff members (i.e. curriculum, schedules, procedures)
  • Participate in and assist with school events as required
  • Attend and constructively contribute in meetings
  • Lead at least one co-curricular activity per year
  • Participate in and assist with school events as required
  • Participate in curriculum and staff development opportunities as required
  • Maintain a high level of professional competence through in-service education professional growth activities
  • Teach a full elementary program excluding the specialist areas of Art, Music, World Languages and PE
  • Identify student needs and be the primary advocate of the student in meeting their needs
