St John’s Preparatory forms part of St John’s College and offers an excellent academic, social and emotional curriculum which is enriched with music, art, drama, technology and sport. The Prep caters to boys from Grades 3 to 7 and has an excellent record in preparing them for their College careers.

The Library department consists of two members of staff: the Librarian and the Library Assistant who support the teaching and learning of the Preparatory School. They provide hands-on literacy intervention programmes and promote reading for pleasure through various activities such as displays, visiting authors, quizzes, book talks and interactive book groups.  Reading for information is also a key priority and the Library team works closely with all departments across the Prep to support the delivery of independent learning skills embedded as part of the school curriculum.

This is a part time permanent position.

The incumbent will be required to work 20 hours a week, divided over four days per week.

Main Purpose of the Role

  • Managing the issuing and returning of the library stock.
  • Shelving stock and keeping the library in good order.
  • Withdrawing stock under the direction of the Librarian.
  • Providing support for cataloguing of new material to the library and archive collections.
  • Processing new material so that it is ready for shelving.
  • Managing the library management system and supporting its use by students.
  • Supporting the annual stock check.
  • Ensuring the Library plays a central role in the academic life of the school.
  • Assisting with budget control.
  • Assisting the Librarian to protect and control library assets.
  • Overseeing the library duties carried out by intern students.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in English, Library and Information Sciences or similar.
  • Reputable further qualifications in Librarianship (desirable).
  • Must be SACE registered.
  • An awareness, understanding and experience of issues relating to safeguarding the health, welfare and safety of students.
  • The ability to take the initiative, to seek advice where necessary and to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Google Suite.
  • Library Management System experience.
  • 3+ years Library experience in a school environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Overdrive experience would be advantageous.
  • All staff are required to have a police clearance certificate.
