High School Social Studies Teacher

Position overview:

This position is a full-time assignment teaching HS Social Studies. The high school operates on an 8-period rotating block schedule, and teachers are assigned to teach 5 of 8 blocks.

Qualifications:

The Social Studies teacher must have:

  • Secondary license or certification for teaching Social Studies, with a preference for a master’s degree
  • Positive attitude
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for all learners
  • Ability to participate in and establish collaborative team structures
  • Proven ability to develop successful academic programs
  • Knowledge of the IB Diploma Program

Preferred skills and experience:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers and others
  • Experience using Understanding by Design to develop learning units
  • Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Understanding of teaching through Inquiry
  • Experience advising Extended Essay projects
  • Experience using student learning data to impact instruction and assessment decisions
  • Experience with innovation
  • Experience with collaborative teaching and learning teams
  • Experience coaching sports and/or supervising student activities

Performance Responsibilities:

Teachers at AISJ are expected to:

  • Be a learner and collaborator. Student learning is the highest priority.
  • Understand and implement evidenced based instruction and assessment practices.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with fellow team department/grade members with regards to planning, assessment, parent contact, subject organization and instructional strategies
  • Communicate and liaise with other school colleagues to promote social and emotional learning opportunities.
  • Constructively contribute to staff meetings
  • Contribute to school spirit and community building activities
  • Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parents
  • Establish links with the parent community to ensure that parents are kept well informed about student progress
  • Actively engage Advisory groups
  • Assist, as required, in the development of social and emotional curricular materials
  • Act as a resource, contact, and support colleague for new staff members (i.e. curriculum, schedules, procedures)
  • Support service partners and service clubs
  • Contribute at least 15 hours beyond the regular contract time to supervise student activities including service learning, sports, clubs, performing arts and other co-curricular activities.
  • Participate in and assist with school events as required
  • Experience with curriculum development in the humanities

Work Hours:

  • 7:10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and
  • 7:10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday
