High School Head of Department: Afrikaans and IsiZulu

STARTING DATE: 1 May 2023

Minimum Requirements

  • hold a Bachelor of Education and/or Postgraduate Certificate in Education
  • be fully qualified to teach Afrikaans First Additional Language (Grades 8 – 12)
  • be registered with SACE
  • possess an extensive understanding of the High School Afrikaans First Additional Language curricula. An understanding of the IsiZulu First Additional Language curricula would be an advantage
  • a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a teaching position
  • must be well versed in the teaching of all genres of literature
  • proven people and curriculum leadership experience
  • teaching IsiZulu experience will be an added advantage
  • have IEB marking experience

Required Competencies

  • have the ability to lead curriculum planning
  • co-ordinate suitable and innovative interventions and strategies to promote effective teaching and learning
  • have very strong communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)
  • be driven to achieve the best results possible for students
  • be prepared to be part of the academic leadership team
  • have leadership and management modelling skills
  • have an understanding of Cooperative Education
  • be a self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills (with students, colleagues and parents/guardians)
  • possess excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • promote and embrace diversity and inclusion
  • possess a willingness and commitment to contribute to the school extra-curricular programme
  • be proficient in working with, and promoting the use of, technology in the classroom

Major Responsibilities

  • take a leading role in managing and coordinating a department with varied subjects
  • provide curriculum leadership for the department
  • represent the school on departmental professional committees and associations
  • ensure the implementation of the school and IEB policies that relate to the department
  • monitor the quality of teaching and learning in the department
  • approve departmental strategies for student assessment
  • monitor student performance in the department
  • acquire appropriate teaching materials and resources
  • motivate students and encourage progress
  • communicate with all staff and parents/guardians
  • provide academic support and enrichment
  • ensure a disciplined classroom environment
  • remain abreast of developments and best practice in teaching
  • incorporate the ethos and values of the school into all aspects of education
