The American International School of Johannesburg is seeking a dynamic drama educator to join its faculty for the 2020-2021 school year. The Drama teacher will help students as both individuals and groups, will foster an appreciation of Theatre, and provide a joyful and supportive learning environment for dramatic development. We seek to provide meaningful drama development for our students. Candidates should be energetic, collaborative and progressive-minded.
Current teaching certification appropriate to age level and subject specializations
A minimum of an undergraduate degree in Education or the area of expertise required.
Previous teaching experience, and strong knowledge in the area of specializations at the required levels of study.
IB Theatre teaching experience required
Thorough understanding of the curricular elements of dramatic studies, and knowledge of drama curriculum.
A proven collaborator and skilled at working well with others. A positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills
Expertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs which develop a sense of classroom community and trust.
A solid understanding of a High school organization, programs and students. A proven ability to differentiate instruction and integrate learning.
Position Specific Responsibilities:
The High School Drama Teacher will have responsibility for teaching all Drama classes and coordinating divisional level and ensemble performance schedules. The Drama Teacher will collaborate with other members of the Fine and Performing Arts department.
In support of this teachers are expected to:
Plan unit lessons and curriculum that aligns with AISJ adopted standards and benchmarks.
Instruct High School Drama classes with enthusiasm, creativity, and sensitivity to student learning styles.
Direct and execute High School dramatic performances.
Utilize technology for instructing students, maintaining records, communicating information to parents, and promoting student and drama program achievements.
Facilitate theatre enrichment opportunities and seek extracurricular performances on behalf of students.
Commitment to professional growth through participation in professional learning communities and development opportunities.
Take an active role in pastoral care of homeroom or advisory groups.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Recent and relevant professional development in teaching and learning
Experience using Understanding by Design to develop learning units
Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
Experience working in an IB Diploma school
Teachers at AISJ are expected to:
Communicate and liaise on a regular basis with fellow team department/grade members with regards to planning, assessment, parent and community contact, subject organization and classroom issues including discipline, expectations and routines
Communicate and liaise with other school colleagues in an effort to promote social and emotional awareness
Take an active role in management and pastoral care of class groups
Attend, and constructively contribute to, staff meetings
Assist in supervision of student breaks
Coordinate class activities as deemed necessary
Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parents
Establish links with the parent community to ensure that parents are kept well informed about student progress
Assist, as required, in the development of social and emotional curricular materials
Act as a resource/contact/support for new staff members (i.e. curriculum, schedules, procedures) Contribute at least 15 hours beyond the regular contract time to supervise student activities
Participate in and, assist with, school events as required
7:10 am to 3:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
7:10 am to 4:00 pm Wednesday
