ROLE SUMMARY:
The Head of Faculty – Science (specialising in Biology and/or Environmental Systems & Societies/Environmental Management) will lead and manage the Science faculty at Northfields International School. This key role involves overseeing curriculum development, staff performance, and student progress within the department while ensuring the highest standards of teaching and learning. The successful candidate will be instrumental in shaping the faculty’s strategic direction, fostering collaboration among staff, and inspiring academic excellence among students.

Northfields International School is a premier independent co-educational day school in Mauritius that provides an English-medium education for over 1200 boys and girls aged between 18 months and 18 years. The Northfields campus in Labourdonnais is situated on owned freehold property and incorporates numerous subject classrooms, dedicated science labs, computer suites, art studios, a design and Special Education Needs (SEN) and English as an Additional Language (EAL) support rooms. Northfields offers internationally recognised educational programmes and qualifications for Montessori, Cambridge, and International Baccalaureate. The curriculum progression in the school begins with Montessori Pre-Nursery, followed by either the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) at NIPS or the Montessori Programme at NIMS. Students from both Primary Schools may progress to Secondary School at NIHS, where they follow the 5-year IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Years 7-11, culminating with the Cambridge IGCSE examination at the end of Year 11. Students in Sixth Form then follow the 2-year IB Diploma Programme (DP).
Apart from being an authorised IB World School, the quality of Northfields is further bolstered through the school’s accreditation with the Council of International Schools (CIS) and memberships with the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa (ISASA) and the Association of Internationals Schools in Arica (AISA). Northfields is registered and licensed in Mauritius with the Ministry of Gender Equality & Welfare for our Pre-Nursery, with the Early Childhood Care and Education Authority (ECCEA) and the Ministry of education and Human Resources for both Primary Schools and the Private Secondary Education Authority (PSEA) for our Secondary School.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement faculty plans aligned with the school’s mission.
- Lead curriculum development and manage resources to achieve teaching goals.
- Use student performance data to drive improvements.
Curriculum & Teaching
- Deliver a high-quality science curriculum aligned with MYP, IGCSE, and IBDP.
- Incorporate best practices and support cross-curricular activities.
Staff Development
- Mentor and manage the Science team.
- Oversee performance, appraisals, and professional development.
- Lead recruitment and retention of staff.
Quality Assurance
- Maintain high teaching standards through assessment and feedback.
- Ensure consistency in marking and reporting.
Communication & Collaboration
- Represent the faculty in school initiatives.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders and promote the department.
Pastoral Support
- Support student well-being and progress in line with school policies.
Teaching
- Deliver teaching as outlined in the Teacher Job Description.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant subject area, with a PGCE or B.Ed. qualification.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of teaching experience in secondary education.
- Proven expertise in delivering science curricula, including Biology, ESS, and/or Environmental Management.
- Experience in using ICT to enhance teaching and learning.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Familiarity with international programmes such as IB MYP, IGCSE, and IBDP.
- Previous experience in an international school setting.
