Head of Department – Senior Phase (Grade 4 – 7)

A vacancy on the permanent, full-time staff at the Preparatory has arisen in respect of an individual who is suitably qualified, experienced and competent to teach in the Senior Phase and has the skills and expertise to serve as Head of Department.

Essential requirements for the position:

  • Have an appropriate university degree / professional teaching qualification;
  • Experience in teaching in the Senior Phase (Grade 4 – 7);
  • SACE registered;
  • Have a clear criminal / sexual offences record and be able to provide a valid clearance document (not older than six (6) months);
  • Knowledge of CAPS and willingness to take a lead in the delivery of the curriculum in an innovative manner;
  • Desire to pursue outstanding teaching practice and student outcomes;
  • Instructional leader and coach committed to developing teachers;
  • Willingness to mentor and lead other senior phase teachers;
  • Readiness to lead as part of the school management team and take responsibility for portfolios within the school;
  • Commitment to on-going personal academic and professional development;
  • Mental resilience that that embraces the challenge of findig solutions to learning barriers within a challenging context;
  • Ability and willingness to work beyond the average hours to fit in with the school requirements;
  • Be a person of integrity and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Must have English as a first language or excellent verbal and written command of the language;
  • Be computer literate and prepared to engage with 21st Century teaching methodologies;
  • Experience using online platforms of education and the delivery of these;
  • Commitment to and involvement in the school’s extra-curricular programme;
  • Willingness to contribute to the values and ethos of the school;
  • Managerial experience will be beneficial.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist students to apply concepts through classroom instruction and presentations;
  • Organising, facilitating and planning of lessons;
  • To plan, control, record and report on assessments;
  • Manage the classroom to create a nurturing and educational environment in the classroom;
  • As part of the academic team, plan, prepare and present interesting, engaging and exciting lessons;
  • Involvement in campus, projects, portfolios, meetings, committee participation, forums, tasks and teams.

  • Meetings, forums and workshops for the grade/phase as required and provide positive feedback to the other teachers;
  • Be prepared to assist with sport and other administrative duties as and when the need arises;
  • Co-ordinate suitable and innovative interventions and strategies to promote effective learning and teaching;
  • Assist the Principal and Vice-Principal with academic, disciplinary and management requirements for the senior phase;
  • Assistance with the management of files and documentation related to policies and procedures.
  • Serve on committee structures as delegated and required by the school e.g. Employment Equity Representative or Health and Safety Officer;
  • Safeguard all equipment allocated to you, update inventory or resources for assigned class, subject, activity and manage assigned budgets where applicable;
  • Attend all special occasions including being available for school tours and outings where necessary;

The successful candidate must:

  • Have a passion for teaching and be able to drive curiosity and passion for learning the subject;
  • Be enthusiastic about working with young children;
  • Have proven interpersonal qualities and skills necessary for close co-operation with members of staff, parents, students and other members of the school community;
  • Be self-motivated, creative and be willing to accept responsibility;
  • Be disciplined and use social media responsibly;
  • Be proactive and show initiative;
  • Behave in a professional manner with regard to behaviour, punctuality and standards of work;
  • Evaluate, reflect and refine their teaching practice;
