Position Summary and Duties

To adopt a holistic view to students in their care, promoting the general progress and well-being of individuals and of any class or group assigned to them. To create a positive learning environment and motivate students to achieve their full potential.

Academics and Teaching

  • As part of the teaching team, plan, prepare and present interesting, exciting lessons that:
    • Build on concepts that students have learnt earlier to link knowledge
    • Cater for the needs of the whole ability range within their class
    • Allow for the progression for all students
  • Establish a teaching environment that is nurturing in nature and promotes learning
  • Take responsibility for evaluating teaching and professional improvement
  • Behave in a professional manner with regard to punctuality, behaviour, standards of work and homework of students
  • Evaluate, reflect on and refine their teaching practice
  • Arrive timeously for each lesson, teach for the full scheduled time; never leave classes unattended
  • Update inventory of resources for assigned class/subject/activity and manage assigned budget
  • Provide extra lessons when required for students who are struggling academically at no extra cost
  • Teach extra lessons to students when required on two afternoons per week
  • Adhere to all mandatory report deadlines
  • Produce documents for students of a high standard
  • Ensure that all videos/DVD’s shown to students are appropriate for the age group concerned
  • Respond to emails and telephone messages from parents within 24 hours
  • Show loyalty to all aspects of Reddford House
  • Refrain from divulging confidential information relating to the School or its students to any unauthorised person at any time.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with parents and students alike, and always be professional in one’s conduct

Extramural involvement

  • Assist in the coaching and management of extra co-curriculum activities at least twice a week
  • Sports; Cultural
  • Community service
  • After care
  • Provide academic support as and when required for 2 hours a week

Pastoral Care and Discipline

  • Be approachable and caring to students, parents and colleagues
  • Communicate accurately to relevant stakeholders
  • Promote and encourage in students a good value system, strong moral stance and courtesy
  • Be responsible and proactive with the implementation and maintenance of the students dress and discipline code

Additional responsibilities

  • Campus / Projects/ portfolios /Meetings/ committee participation/ forums/ tasks/ teams/ other
  • Serve on committee structures as delegated and required by the school e.g. Employment equity, H&S etc.
  • Safeguard all equipment allocated to you, update inventory or resources for assigned class/ subject/activity and manage assigned budget
  • Attend all special occasions at the discretion of the relevant Head
  • This includes being available to attend school tours and outings

Requirements of the role

  • Teaching Diploma or Undergraduate degree with postgraduate Teaching Diploma
  • SACE registered
  • Several years teaching experience in a similar role (Foundation Phase)
  • Exam setting and student evaluation
