Penryn NPC, situated in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, is an independent co-educational school with a Christian ethos, linked to
the Methodist Church. Penryn is a member of ISASA and a member of the global Round Square organisation.

Penryn is seeking to appoint an Executive Head who will lead, direct and inspire the school and its community to achieve its vision to be:

  • a welcoming and inclusive school;
  • a values-driven school based on the Christian faith, where every scholar is valued as a child of God;
  • a school of academic excellence with an outstanding professional staff dedicated to teaching and learning and the
    personal growth and development of each scholar;
  • a school dedicated to the responsible stewardship of the earth, instilling a great love and appreciation for God’s
  • a school that builds integrity and justice through service to others, including working with Penreach;
  • a school that is innovative, flexible, and future-fit.

The Executive Head will be directly responsible for leading the College (Senior School Grade 8 – 12, IEB and Cambridge
curriculum) as well as have support and oversight of the Preparatory School. The Preparatory Head will report to the Executive Head. The Executive Head will also be responsible for leading Business Services through the Business Service Managers.

Required Education Experience

  • Relevant professional qualification. Honours degree in Educational Management or Masters in Education would be
  • 7 years of experience in a leadership position in a school structure.
  • Member of SACE.
  • Fluent in English and at least one other South African Language.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning and the application of 21st century practices in


  • High level of technical skills; Microsoft office and Google suites
  • Excellent communicating, planning, organising, and reporting skills
  • Good budgeting and analytical skills
  • Time management, strategic thinking, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to listen, negotiate and resolve conflict when it arises
  • Understanding the business of the independent school

Key performance areas

  • Provide professional leadership within the school
    • Developing quality teachers through ongoing professional development
    • Raising learners’ aspirations and attainment

  • Relationship building
    • Work with the school Council in determining the strategic vision for the school and the policies that support this
    • Lead the Senior Management team to ensure that the vision and policies are achieved
    • Build relationships within the school, the broader educational sector, the community, and donors
    • Lead, motivate and inspire the staff, scholars, and parents of Penryn
  • Sound financial administration
    • Exercise rigorous quality control over income and expenditure
    • Have a clear and firm understanding of financial demands and be responsible for the financial management of the school
    • Ensure that school accounts and records are properly kept
    • Make appropriate use of funds in consultation with relevant stakeholders
    • Meet weekly with the Business Service Managers
  • Strategic planning
    • Develop synergies between College, Preparatory, Penreach and Business Services
    • Support the Penreach vision and activities
    • Marketing and ensuring a full school
    • Work with the marketing department to ensure there is a strong marketing plan
    • Develop and implement transformation and development program
    • Grow scholar and boarding numbers to reach strategic capacity
    • Be informed and reflective regarding economic and socio-political trends which may have an impact on the present and future of Penryn
  • Curriculum development
    • Lead the development and implementation of the Cambridge syllabus alongside our current IEB syllabus
    • Develop the quality of academic achievement throughout the school.


  • Profess the Christian faith. The incumbent would lead out of a Christian worldview and seek to discern God’s
    purpose for the school. It would mean that they would have an attitude of prayer and a reliance on God’s strength
    and wisdom.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership at a senior management level in a school environment. The person must be an
    educational leader who is reflective with regard to the practice of teaching and learning and the purpose and value
    of schools in our society.
  • Have the skills and the emotional strength to manage and lead the staff, the scholars, the parents, and the alumni,
    who because they are human, fail, and succeed, disappoint, and bring joy. They need to hold an awareness of the
    challenges and changes that are inherent in leading a school community in the 21st century.
  • Effectively deal with crisis, and celebrate success.
  • Understand the business of running a school, finance, marketing, maintenance, future sustainability, enrolment, and
  • Understand the regulatory and policy framework within which the school operates in South Africa.
  • Communicate and hold up a vision for the school, to the staff, the scholars, the parents, and effectively draw people
    into that vision so that it becomes a shared vision.
  • Work with and under the authority of the governance of the school and School Council, and build fruitful and healthy
    relationships with all important stakeholders.
  • Represent Penryn in all public platforms and be the custodian of the Penryn Brand.
