Executive Director




A newly established independent schools quality assurance company, Office of Independent Schools Evaluations, Southern Africa NPC (OISESA), is seeking a founding Executive Director.

OISESA is a non-profit company which will be applying to obtain a public benefit organisation status. It will be led by an Executive Director with a very small secretariat staff complement and a team of independent contractor Mentors, who will facilitate quality assurance evaluations at independent schools in Southern Africa. OISESA is based in Johannesburg.

The anticipated appointment of an Executive Director is January 2022. The position of the Executive Director is an exciting greenfield role for a person who can recruit, establish and lead a successful team in a new venture. It will demand specific personal attributes and competencies, in addition to general leadership skills and experiences, which are all listed below.


OISESA’s Executive Director will primarily be responsible for:

  • Participating in leading the design and development of innovative, current and comprehensive evaluation instruments.
  • Establishing and building positive relationships with all identified stakeholders within a regional context.
  • Recruiting, selecting, training and managing a skilled team of Mentors.
  • Advocating for quality assurance to be implemented within independent schools.
  • Ensuring the governance structures of OISESA are established and suitably skilled incumbents are selected for the governance portfolios.
  • Ensuring that independent schools are kept abreast of information relating to the relevance of, and the need for, innovative quality assurance evaluations.
  • Leading and managing a backlog of quality assurance evaluations that need to be conducted within a limited timeframe.
  • Successfully manage a quality assurance contract by exceeding the customer’s expectations.
  • Ensuring that well-written quality assurance reports are delivered to evaluated schools.
  • Drafting clear and comprehensive reports to the costumer regarding quality assurance evaluations undertaken in terms the contract.
  • Soundly manage the finances OISESA.
  • Ensuring that OISESA is legally compliant with all relevant laws.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

The qualifications and experience of the successful candidate will include:

  • At least 5 years in a senior/top management role.
  • A relevant undergraduate/honours qualification.
  • Sound knowledge of issues in independent education.
  • Knowledge of and interest in automated systems.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the South African economic and political environments.
  • Rigorous interest in the development of evaluation instruments.

The skills requirements and attributes of the successful candidate will include:

  • Excellent communication skills – written, oral and presentation.

  • Financial management experience.
  • Very strong numeracy and computer literacy skills (intermediate MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Preferred qualifications, experience and skills requirements could include:

  • An educational qualification.
  • Experience in a Senior Management position within an independent school.
  • Knowledge of a non-profit working environment.
  • A post graduate qualification in monitoring and evaluation.
