Position Overview:

The Literacy Coach/Librarian will support classroom teachers in implementing best practices in literacy instruction within the classroom. The Literacy Coach/Librarian will be required to use extensive knowledge of pedagogy to coach and support teachers. AISJ uses a Reader’s and Writer’s workshop model, with projected units of study, derived from standards and benchmarks. The Literacy Coach/Librarian will help lead the school forward with our literacy initiatives.

The successful candidate will have both vision and an ability to work side by side with our teachers and administration to develop and implement an even stronger literacy program. Therefore, the successful candidate must have extensive experience leading literacy initiatives and professional development within a school community.

The Literacy Coach/Librarian will also serve as the school’s librarian. This will require collaboration with teachers in: effective use of the library, informational literacy lessons, teaching research skills, overseeing the day-to-day running of the library, ordering resources and books, and utilizing the library as a professional development resource for teachers. The Literacy Coach/Librarian will also collaborate with a full time librarian teaching partner, whose roles and responsibilities include: the running of the library, teaching research and literacy lessons, and ensuring the circulation desk is operating smoothly.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Teaching certification and, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in Education
  • School Librarian certification preferred
  • Master’s in library sciences, Literacy or Curriculum preferred
  • Coursework or specialization in literacy, curriculum design, and/or library studies preferred
  • 5 + years teaching elementary or middle school (2 + years of overseas experience preferred)
  • Experience collaborating with and coaching skilled teachers of literacy
  • Experience differentiating instruction using Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop
  • Experience training colleagues in the implementation and interpretation of a variety of formative and summative assessments such as: competency progressions, anecdotal notes, running records, Fountas and Pinnell, PALs, and Words Their Way
  • Experience using library systems such as ‘Destiny’ preferred
  • Strong technical skills both in terms of library systems and technology as a tool for teaching and learning
  • Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural, internationally-minded environment
  • Experience in developing workshops for colleagues and parents in literacy
  • Experience as a teacher leader and/or leading curriculum committees and/or implementation of curriculum initiatives
  • Experience with Understanding by Design (UbD) and developing personalized, conceptual and connected based units of study

Performance Responsibilities:

  • To research and implement best practices in literacy
  • To model explicit instruction for teachers in the classroom
  • To collaboratively plan differentiated instruction with teachers and grade level teams
  • To facilitate unit projections in reading and writing
  • To ensure that the library complements and supports balanced literacy programs Pre-K to Grade 8
  • To ensure that the library collection is current, relevant and engaging for students, and enhances learning
  • To develop and maintain the guided reading book room and facilitate ordering for classroom libraries so that they are current, and offer a range of levelled and engaging reading materials for students
  • To collaborate with the other campus librarians to create an effective and cohesive school library system
  • To work with whole class, small groups and individual students in the library
  • To research and locate materials and resources for teachers to support their units of study
  • To work with teachers to integrate information literacy standards into the existing curriculum and assessments
  • To work with teachers to develop a common understanding of the potential of the library to support, extend and enrich learning
  • Design and lead professional development for teachers in literacy
  • Design and lead parent workshops that focus on various aspects of literacy development
