We invite applications for an Educational Psychologist who meets the below listed requirements.

About the position:

The Educational Psychologist will provide direct support and interventions to grade four to seven students, and consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals (i.e., occupational therapists, speech, and language therapists). In addition, they will aim to improve support strategies, work with school management to improve school-wide practices and policies and collaborate with appropriate professionals to coordinate needed services.

Key competencies

  • A master’s degree in Educational Psychology and current registration with HPCSA
  • Minimum work experience of five years in a school context
  • Commitment to working with young children, adolescents, parents, and staff
  • Strong communication and inter-personal skills
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • Creativity and a child-centred approach
  • Flexibility regarding time, particularly regarding trauma and crises
  • Computer literacy with a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams
  • Ability to prioritise, multi-task and work under pressure
  • Appropriate educational experience in a mainstream school would be preferable

Duties & Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Facilitating Academic Progress and Potential

  • Conduct phase-specific psychological and academic assessments (school readiness, baseline academic screenings)
  • Work in partnership with teachers to address student’s learning needs
  • Monitor and effectively communicate with parents about student progress
  • Monitor referrals to other professionals (ex. speech therapy, occupational therapy, learning support, external psychologists etc.)
  • Oversee and manage the process of implementing Individual Education Plans for students with specific learning barriers.
  • Promote student motivation and engagement

Promote Positive Behaviour and Mental Health

  • Provide short-term play therapy, as well as individual and group counselling
  • Assess and intervene around student emotional and behavioural needs
  • Promote positive peer relationships (ex. psychoeducational workshops)
  • Make referrals to and help coordinate services provided by other professionals
  • Provide guidance and support to teachers to support their student’s learning and developmental needs

Collaborating with Parents and Families

  • Help families understand their child’s learning and developmental needs (ex. workshops on topics related to learning and development, parent guidance)
  • Connect families with internal and external service providers when necessary

Maintain Effective Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration

  • Coordinate and case-manage referrals from various stakeholders
  • Attend and contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings at regular intervals
  • Monitor feedback of individual students in a therapeutic process within the broader multi-disciplinary team
  • Ensure effective record-keeping of students in various interventions / therapies on a month-to-month basis
  • Promote effective relationships between teachers and respective members of the multi-disciplinary team

Develop and Maintain Professional Standards

  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism (ex. confidentiality, dual roles) and ethical behaviour as stipulated by governing bodies, including the Health Professions Council of South Africa
  • Maintain registration with HPCSA and ensure medical indemnity
  • Continuously develop professional skills and knowledge relevant to the phase in which a psychologist function
  • Report on work duties in verbal, written and/or other communication to relevant stakeholders, including, but not limited to the H.O.D and management team.
