High School DRAMATIC ARTS Teacher

Dramatic Arts at St Martin’s School is about so much more than just getting onto a stage. It is about academic rigour, learning to work in a team, self-reflection and developing a deeper knowledge of self, nurturing empathy, growing a real confidence and, of course, having a great deal of fun.

It is also about debating real issues that affect teenagers in their current world, intelligently challenging current societal norms and using drama to be a voice for the outcasts of our society.

Drama plays a significant role at St Martin’s and the school is known for its superb productions, musicals and other onstage performances. The incumbent will need to take full ownership of these, as well as to organise regular theatre visits and trips to festivals such as the Hilton Arts Festival.

In today’s world it is clear that the pupils’ excitement about any academic endeavour is inversely proportional to the time spent with their noses in a textbook on straight curriculum. We are thus seeking to appoint a passionate and innovative Dramatic Arts teacher who would relish the challenge of making their subject the one that pupils run to after break.

The candidate should have at least 5 years relevant teaching experience, with an educational qualification from a recognised institution. IEB experience would be an added advantage and the applicant needs to be willing and able to explore technology options in the classroom. A commitment to, and an involvement in various school programmes outside of the classroom is required.

St Martin’s is a Christian school and our teachers support this ethos.

The Headmaster seeks to appoint a suitable candidate, effective from 1 April, 2021 or as soon thereafter as possible. The following should be submitted to the Headmaster by Friday, 22 January 2021 via email on: vacancies@stmartin.co.za

  1. A detailed CV,
  2. The contact details of two referees,
  3. A paragraph outlining what you will do to make St Martin’s the premier Dramatic Arts school in Johannesburg,
  4. A short opinion piece on paragraph two above.

St Martin’s is about passion and the joy of learning. We are thus looking for an extraordinary person to instil a passion for Dramatic Arts in our pupils.

An application will not in itself entitle the applicant to an interview and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview. We reserve the right not to fill this position.
