Somerset College is an independent co-educational school offering schooling from Grade 000 to Matric IEB and Cambridge AS and A levels. Founded in 1997 Somerset College is a welcoming, stimulating centre of learning situated in the beautiful Cape Winelands.

A Saturday School was started in 2022 in partnership with students from Lwandle in Strand and has now expanded to such an extent that there is a need for a Director who can head up this very important offering. The successful candidate should be a qualified and experienced educator who is creative, enthusiastic and innovative. Business experience would be advantageous.

Director of Saturday School

Commencement date: 1 January 2025

Non-negotiable criterion:

Only candidates with SACE registration will be shortlisted.

The successful candidate must do thorough planning of:

  • Term programmes;
  • transport for students to Somerset College and back to their schools;
  • staffing – source competent and qualified teachers;
  • academic content – liaise with schools and teaching staff;
  • books and stationery orders;
  • meals;
  • marketing material – assist Marketing Department with the promotion of the project.

Set and oversee necessary bookings for:

  • Transport;
  • food;
  • venues for Saturday events.

Liaise with partner schools:

  • Set up, implement and monitor agreement with partner schools;
  • screen and finalise student applications;
  • coordinate and encourage partner schools’ teachers’ involvement;
  • coordinate curriculum support plans with partner schools;
  • negotiate term programmes with partner schools;
  • provide staff training where and when required.

Manage Saturday school:

  • Establish, lead and run teaching team (Science, Mathematics, English, Life Sciences – Grades 10 – 12);
  • agree curriculum support (content, timing, assessments etc.) with partner schools;
  • oversee delivery of curriculum support (implementation of marking and reporting on baseline and diagnostic assessments; preparation and delivery of 5 hrs of teaching per weekend, 28 weekends per year; with regular assessment and feedback to students);
  • compile a 6-monthly report to donors: expenditures (finance department) and programme performance;
  • keep track of all assessments and report results to schools;
  • make contact with parents of students attending Saturday school;
  • budgeting in liaison with the finance department;
  • staff wages – timesheets, invoicing and payments (monthly or termly);
  • liaise with the marketing department and support initiatives as required;
  • interact and build relationships with donors and find potential new donors;
  • build and expand the current programme to include more schools and students;
  • special attention to early childhood development and the establishment of a formal training programme for teachers in need of an official ECD qualification in collaboration with a university;
  • regular contact with partner schools through follow-up visits to discuss matters pertaining to students, academics and general disciplinary issues;
  • do marketing in the townships – visit schools to market the programme;
  • do career guidance for students and arrange with sponsors to hold events where they inform staff and students about career options and financial support they offer for eligible students.

Competencies:

  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to coordinate and work with other professionals;
  • an interest in and experience with Senior School students (Grades 10 – 12) and a knowledge of their developmental stages;
  • able to use own initiative, be creative and flexible;
  • professionalism and a high standard of ethics;
  • must be able to handle confidential matters ethically and with sensitivity;
  • must have a good understanding of the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements as defined by the Department of Basic Education;
  • business acumen – a clear understanding of budgets and budget planning will be an advantage;
  • be registered with SACE.

General Somerset College Duties:

  • Be willing to, from time to time or as the need arises, teach some academic lessons within the Somerset College Senior School space;
  • may be required to fulfil the duties as Grade Tutor to build rapport with a specific group of Somerset College Senior School students.
