The Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School (DBCS) is an independent boys’ choir school with an emphasis on
choral singing. The school has a Christian ethos and caters for boys from Grade 4 to Grade 9.
The Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School is looking for a creative, ambitious, inspirational and visionary Director of Music.
This position not only involves choral leadership but also includes a considerable role on the school management team.
The successful candidate will inter alia:
Be responsible for all aspects of curricular and co-curricular music.
Have extensive local and international choral coaching, conducting and performance experience
Possess skill, knowledge and experience in adolescent male vocal coaching.
Oversee and develop the choir’s programming, productions, community, digital, professional development, musical and commissioning programmes.
Strategically lead the artistic direction of the organisation and ensure the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School enjoys a continued position as a leading talent incubator and producer of new musical work both nationally and internationally.
Maintain an organisational culture which values the highest standards – both in executing the artistic vision and in management practice – drawing the very best from a team of permanent staff.
Ensure the culture is inclusive, collaborative, safe and supportive; as well as artistically bold and ambitious.
Present an innovative programme of new compositions and arrangements of the highest quality that reflects a contemporary South African society in all its diversity.
Lead the development of artistic online and digital strategies.
Develop and implement a strategic plan that will take the choir forward over the next five years.
This strategy will include a dynamic artistic policy and programme as described above, development of new live and online audiences, national and international tours as well as financial sustainability.
Ensure the efficient, effective, solvent and sustainable financial management of the DBCS music department and to identify appropriate musical opportunities for income generation.
Have strong leadership, administrative, organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Have the ability to travel when required both nationally and internationally
The successful candidate will:
Report to the Executive Headmaster and the Board of Directors of the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School
Be expected to fully support the ethos of the school
Be committed to the duties associated with an independent boys’ boarding school

Be expected to commence service on 1 January 2021
