AISJ maintains strong child protection policies & procedures, this ensures that our students can pursue their education in a safe, secure, and caring environment. The Director of Activities and Athletics Director (commonly referred to as AD), oversees the development and implementation of the AISJ activities and athletics program and ensures regular communication with the AISJ community regarding all aspects of the program.
The AD supervises all activity providers, coaches, and Activity Office staff including the Aquatics Coordinator. The AD manages the activities budget and works with the operational staff to facilitate the efficient use and maintenance of buildings, equipment, fields, and play areas, to ensure optimal implementation of an outstanding sports and activities program. While the job is primarily based and focused on the Johannesburg Campus, the AD is a source of guidance and assistance for the Pretoria Campus activities program managers.
The ideal candidate is an experienced Athletic/Activities Director and a vibrant team player with the ability and willingness to work cooperatively with the AISJ leadership team. They must be an experienced and highly organized professional, with the ability to multitask and oversee activities and events. The AISJ AD must implement best practices in child protection, embrace cultural differences and make decisions with justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion at the forefront.
Detailed Duties and Responsibilities of the AD:
Works closely with the ES, MS, HS, and Pretoria Campus Leadership in the planning and coordination of all student co-curricular athletics/activities programs and events.
Keeps the school administration informed concerning the progress of programs and operations.
Reviews individual student eligibility for participation in the co-curricular activities.
Oversees the athletics, aquatics and activities program at AISJ including the hiring and supervision of all related staff/coaches as well as confirming coaching/sponsor assignments and officiating for all school activities.
Guides activity club coordinators/sponsors in the planning and coordination of special student events (assemblies, dances, spirit events, student elections, etc.).
Coordinates tournaments and events hosted by AISJ.
Coordinates all travel arrangements such as reservations, correspondences, housing, hotels, plane tickets, visas, and other necessary items for traveling.
Hosts pre-trip information sessions for parents and students.
Schedules and coordinates activities and athletics events for both boys and girls in all school divisions.
Arranges for the purchase, repair and replacement of necessary equipment and supplies to ensure efficiency in the co-curricular activities..
Provides activity sponsors and coaches with the necessary forms and information for distribution to student participants including: parental permission for participation and travel, medical information, conduct, rules and training, travel information.
Coordinates and updates the K-12 activities calendar.
Management of the K-12 Activities Budget.
Ensure all teachers fulfil the CCA commitment.
Athletic Program Management:
Maintains an inventory of all sports equipment and uniforms.
Arranges, oversees and directs the athletic awards ceremonies with the assistance of all coaches in the athletic program.
Represents AISJ in sports conferences (ISSEA), and attends required meetings (domestic and international)
Manages the Eagle Club (booster club).
Activities Program Management:
Prepares and arranges all school trips: domestic or international.
Guides the appropriate activities coordinator and/or sponsor in the planning and coordination of special student activities (assemblies, dances, etc…)
Schedules the use of school-wide facilities for school events and activities.
Represents AISJ in activities conferences ( ISSEA, ISTA, AMIS, etc.)
Duties and responsibilities can be altered by the supervisor at any time
During circumstances when Activities and/or Athletics seasons and/or sessions are postponed or cancelled, the AD may be assigned alternate duties that may include teaching in the physical education department or other roles
The AD oversees personnel in the Activities Office, Swimming Pool, and the Pretoria Campus. Responsibilities for the program are sub-divided accordingly.
Bachelor’s Degree in the Health Sciences or Sports Management
Minimum of seven years as an AD in a leading international school
Experience mentoring and evaluating coaches and activity providers across a variety of programs
Strong writing, public speaking, and communication skills
Proficient computer skills including the full Google Suite
Experience managing a team (Activities Office)
Experience managing and developing international school activity conferences (ISSEA)
Knowledge and understanding of the rules and regulations involved in sports and activities offered at AISJ
Proficiency in staging large events (Sports tournaments, MUN, ISTA, AMIS)
A commitment to continuing as a club sponsor or coach
Master’s of Education (preferred)

7.00 am – 5:00pm: Monday – Friday
7:00am – 2:00pm: Saturday
The AD reports to school in July, along with the leadership team.
An additional stipend, on top of the teacher salary, will be paid to compensate for the extra hours that the position will require outside of general school hours.
