Maitisong is a department within Maru-a-Pula school and is responsible for the management of the Maitisong Theatre, the Maitisong Studio and the Maitisong Courtyard.

Maitisong is a pioneer in celebrating the Arts, Culture and Creativity in Botswana and has established itself as a leader for showcasing the performing arts.  This is predominantly done through our work with performers, theatre companies, art lessons, theatre management, events management and fundraising. Maitisong’s primary contribution to the arts is the platform it gives to local artists – a space for performance, exhibition, collaboration and learning.

The School has a vacancy for a full-time Artistic Director of Maitisong, who will report to the Principal.  The person should have a solid operational knowledge of theatres, as well as a creative flair for performing arts scheduling. The Artistic Director can occasionally direct shows and perform. Their core function is to cater to the existing Maitisong audience, while bringing forward new and interesting performances.

Requirements of the role are:

  • Bachelors Degree in Performing Arts, Theatre, Dance, Music, Arts Administration or related field required; a Masters Degree would be preferred, but is not essential.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience working in professional theatres and/or Art Centres.
  • Demonstrated ability to build internal and external partner relationships to drive the programmes and schedules.
  • Creating Maitisong’s programme, i.e. selecting the shows that will be displayed during the season.
  • Setting and overseeing the  production schedule for the season.
  • In consultation with the Principal, hiring staff: artists, directors, performers and actors, stage managers, designers, etc.
  • Being in charge of theatrical development: commissioning performances, selecting scripts that are submitted to the theatre.
  • Managing the theatre’s budget and dealing with funding bodies (charities, the government, sponsors, trusts, etc.)
  • Strong communication, facilitation and presentation skills are necessary to actively communicate with all levels of management, staff, outside agencies and customers. Should be proficient at delivering presentations to audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and project management skills, including the ability to execute large-scale initiatives in a complex, dynamic environment while maintaining focus on the school’s core business.
  • Strategic planning, creative and innovative thinking skills, along with high intellect and sound judgment with a track record of getting results. Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work independently or in a group setting.
  • Ability to work well under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities.
  • An understanding of culture and change management.
  • Strong computer skills.
