Oakley House High School in Diep River, Cape Town is a rapidly growing, independent, co-educational
school specialising in supporting individuals with specific learning difficulties.

Applications are invited for the position of

Alternative Stream Teacher or potentially, Stream Lead

starting 1 Jan 2021.

The Alternative Stream is a rapidly expanding Unit in the High School that comprises mid-ability students following a less academic route. It consists of three established phases:

  • Amended Learning Program (13-15 year olds),
  • Transition to Work (TFE) Program (16 to 18 year olds), and
  • students pursuing their General Education and Training Certificate (Grade 9 equivalent in the AET system).

The Teacher position encompasses being responsible for teaching the TFE and GETC students, in mostly small groups, and will likely appeal to a teacher with some experience, keen on ‘owning’ their own space.

For a suitable candidate, the position has the potential to be a Lead role, and would appeal to a teacher keen on furthering their career in Special Needs Leadership. In addition to the above, the incumbent will oversee and shape the entire running of this small but vibrant Unit – its students, running, and staff team. Further responsibilities would include overall organisation and administration, greater liaison with parents and stakeholders, overseeing University interns who assist in the program, and growth of the Unit.

The ideal candidate for this position would be:

  • SACE registered, preferably qualified in Intermediate Phase, or Senior Phase with a heart for people over content.
  • In possession of Special Needs experience, preferably by Qualification
  • In possession of 5+ years of teaching experience.
  • Passionate about working with individuals
  • Proficient with using technology for teaching and administration
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively, and for the Lead role, to be keen on Leadership
  • Highly organised with attention to detail, yet also an expansive thinker
  • Excellent in written and spoken English communication

Interested parties are to send a Letter of Motivation and Curriculum Vitae to: The Principal, Mr J Buchanan, at  the email address below, Subject line “AS Post”.

Only suitable candidates will be considered. An application will not in itself entitle the applicant to an interview. Oakley House reserves the right not to make an appointment. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
