Academic Tutor: Johannesburg Region
The Realema Teacher Intern Programme is an NPO which offers comprehensive bursaries to talented and hard-working students of colour from vulnerable communities, to study for a teaching degree, while gaining valuable work experience as full-time teacher interns at top schools. We help our bursary recipients escape the poverty cycle by building sustainable careers in teaching, while also developing the passionate and professional teachers that South Africa so badly needs.
Applications are invited for the post of Academic Tutor: Johannesburg Region.
Starting date: 1 January 2025.
Preferred requirements are:
- Undergraduate degree
- Excellent command of English written and spoken language
- Experience and skill in teaching or tutoring English grammar, academic writing and English literature
- Experience in Foundation Phase teaching would be beneficial
- Proficient use and navigation of:
- Cloud-based storage systems
- Microsoft Word, Excel, Google applications and Teams
- Digital university platforms
- Competencies such as:
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and intercultural skills
- The ability to work well in multicultural environments and with diverse constituencies
- Exceptional organisation and planning skills with an eye for detail
- Collaboration and teamwork with a willingness to go the extra mile
- Flexibility and adaptability with an ability to self-motivate and work under pressure
- Ability to travel to one-on-one tutoring sessions in and around greater Johannesburg
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Weekly tutoring sessions – in person or online, individually or in small groups – of over 25 students.
- Tutor English, while also tracking students’ progress and offering guidance in other modules
- Acquiring knowledge and understanding of the university modules that are being tutored
- Organisational tasks:
- Create and manage tutoring roster
- Assist students with semester plans and track students’ academic progress
- Source and manage textbook requirements
- Assist with other operational and administrative tasks for Realema as required on an ad hoc basis
- Student intern management:
- Assist with university registrations
- Assist with student intern development and mentorship
- Attend candidate interviews and assist with selection processes
- Attend Realema functions/courses which may fall outside of office hours
- Attend weekly operations and planning meetings
