The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Schools Challenge is an exciting competition run by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).
The challenge gives Grade 12 learners, who are passionate about economics, the unique opportunity to get to grips with some of the issues which the SARB needs to consider when it sets the repo rate – a rate which affects every single person and business in South Africa.
Learners participating in the challenge step into the shoes of the Governor and members of the MPC. They translate the economic theory they have learnt since Grade 10 into a practical real-life issue by wrestling with information that the MPC considers in reaching a decision on what the country’s interest rate should be.
The challenge offer learners a great opportunity to expand their understanding of Monetary Policy; improve their economic analysis; put some of the economic theory into practice and stimulate interest in a career in Economics.
How to enter the Challenge:
The main criteria: your school should offer Mathematics and Economics and have at least four learners enrolled to write matric during the year of participation.
