Royal Society of South Africa: National School Science Essay Competition

The Royal Society of South Africa is delighted to offer learners the opportunity to enter our National School Science Essay Competition – now in its 25th year!

The topics for 2023 are:

  • ‘How would you advise your local authority to develop better sustainable waste management? Are recycling, upcycling, and developing the circular economy the best approaches?’
  • ‘How should the car of the future be powered: fossil fuels, electricity, hydrogen or something else?’
  • ‘Discuss how indigenous knowledge in South Africa has led to the development of valuable new products and services, used internationally, and what would you do to increase this development?’

In each of the three categories, the prizes are:

  • 1st Prize R5 000.
  • 2nd Prize R4 000.
  • 3rd Prize R2 000.
  • Two Merit Prizes to the value of R1 000 each.

PLUS: Two ‘Avid Educator’ Awards worth R2 000 each for teachers.

The closing date is 31 May 2023.
