This innovative competition promotes creative thought and innovation by inviting grade 7 to 12 learners to connect Mathematics and Art in an artwork.
Whether you are admiring the beautiful architecture of a building, enjoying the colours of the sunset or measuring out the ingredients for a meal, one thing is clear: mathematically-precise shapes, angles and patterns are everywhere.
To encourage learners to recognize mathematics in the world around them and bring it to life, the Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre (GMMDC) at Nelson Mandela University is running its sixth annual National MathArt Competition. Entrants must submit artworks inspired by mathematics and the theme.
In 2023, learners are invited to create an artwork depicting the theme: Mathematics in Africa: Past, Present, Future.
For the first round, learners submit a photograph of the artwork and answer three questions related to the theme and their artwork. Learners in the final round will be requested to send their artwork to the GMMDC in Gqeberha.
We would like to encourage Mathematics and Art teachers to work together to motivate the learners to enter.
The competition runs from 1 March 2023 to 30 April 2023. Entries are done online by registering at www.mathart.co.za. Competition rules and artwork requirements can also be viewed on the website. Entrance is FREE.
