In 2009 South Africa introduced a special permit called the Dispensation of Zimbabweans Project (DZP), which allowed Zimbabwean permit holders to work, conduct business and study in South Africa.

On 12 August 2014, the Minister of Home Affairs announced the closure of the project with effect from 31 December 2014. The DZP project is to be replaced by the Zimbabwean Special Dispensation Permit (ZSP). The ZSP permits will be valid until 31 December 2017. As with the DZP permits, the ZSP will allow Zimbabweans to live, work, conduct business and study in South Africa for the duration of the permit.

Only those Zimbabweans who hold the DZP permit are eligible to apply for the ZSP.
