The Molteno Institute for Language and Literacy is an NPO based in Johannesburg, Gauteng. We service primary schools in South Africa by providing professional development and support in the teaching of South African indigenous languages and English First Additional language, particularly in the Foundation Phase. We also provide literacy and language materials for teachers and learners.

We are excited to offer non-speakers of African languages, graded readers in African languages called the Vula Bula series. These are carefully structured graded texts for early, emergent and fluent readers in the form of beautifully illustrated stories, contextualised to the young child’s inner world and life experiences. The books are short and simple, and contain predictable text to facilitate and encourage reading for learning and for enjoyment. The graded readers can be used to help introduce teaching and learning in an African language at a school, or be used to strengthen it where African language learning already exists.

The following languages are supported: isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi (Northern Sotho), Sesotho, Setswana, Xitsonga and Tshivenḓa. Single readers can be purchased for R20.18, and R45.89 respectively; library packs and classroom packs are also available at reduced rates.
