Doing, tasting, believing and knowing: a new perspective on the art and science of teaching Grade R
A Visitorship Report by Jean Schäfer, St Andrew’s Preparatory School
A Visitorship grant from ISASA enabled me to travel to Switzerland and England during April and May 2015, to visit schools and to learn more about the pedagogy of Grade R.
Three questions motivated my study of these settings: What pedagogy in England and Switzerland is applicable for Grade R in South Africa? How do Grade R teachers in those countries create an excitement about mathematics? and How can Grade R children be inspired to explore and investigate early mathematical constructs and in so doing, develop their own confidence?
