World Education Games (08:00)

World Education Games

6 - 8 March 2012

The World Education Games is the exciting event for all schools and students around the world. It runs from 6-8 March, involving 5.5 million students from over 200 countries and territories.

This is the global challenge to get all students (4-18 years of age) excited about learning, and to give the top students in each school an opportunity to see how they measure up against the best.

Students are given their own personal online Games centre, from which they can participate in all 3 events from school and home. Students are matched in real time with up to 3 other students of similar age and ability in exciting live challenges.

Over the last 5 years, students have shown an average improvement of over 30% in speed and accuracy on World Maths Day, making it a powerful way to improve core computation and number skills. Similarly, World Spelling Day has achieved dramatic average improvement results, with 2011 showing a 25% improvement in speed and accuracy.

The questions within World Science Day take a unique and fun approach, designed to foster curiosity and excitement about science, whilst helping students to improve their ability to answer knowledge, application and reasoning questions.

The event is free, all that is required is internet access. Last year we had about 40,000 South African learners take part.

For more information, please visit the World Education Games website.

Outdoor     Education     Conference

Outdoor Education Conference

9 - 10 March 2012

Somerset College, Somerset West
Cost: R850 per delegate, excluding travel & accommodation

The concept of Outdoor Education has spread widely throughout our schools in recent years and, as one of the schools that has embraced this aspect of education with enthusiasm since its foundation, Somerset College will host this conference which, we hope, will be the first of many.

The conference is aimed at organisers of existing Outdoor Education programmes at schools (both Primary and Secondary) or for those who are thinking of starting one, to get together and exchange ideas, challenges and the philosophical foundations of OE.

We have had indications of support from schools from all over South Africa and have secured some excellent speakers to stimulate the discussions. Most importantly, we hope to share good practice and worthwhile educational activities. In addition we have invited companies that supply a number of our schools to display their equipment so that organisers can engage with them and view what is currently available.

PROPOSED PROGRAMME
Braam Malherbe: Well-known extreme adventurer, motivational speaker, youth developer, TV presenter and author, but most of all, a nononsense wildlife conservationist
Dr Alex Barry: A consulting psychologist who has done research on the developmental benefits of Outdoor Education in some of our schools
Alex Junod: Director of the Maretlwane Bush School, who has also worked at Kananui in Australia
Short papers from a variety of schools that currently run a variety of Outdoor Education programmes
Organisations that provide training: the Mountain Development Trust, the African Paddling Association, Outward Bound
Workshops on a variety of OE issues such as leadership, the role of adults, risk factors, what works best
Entertainment A special evening at Waterford Wine Estate
BOOKINGS Interested people should complete the Application Form and send it, together with a copy of the payment of their conference fee, to Quentin du Toit or fax it to him at 021 842 3908.

Gym And Tonic (14:00 - 14:00)

Gym & Tonic: Supplements and Drugs in School Sport

Hosted by DR. JON PATRICIOS

Venue: Len Millar Hall – Cheese and wine evening
Date: Wednesday, 14 March 2012
Time: 18h00

Cost: R100

The much sought-after Dr Jon Patricios will address us at a ‘cheese and wine’ function to be hosted by the RPA.

Jon has been team physician to school, club, provincial and international sports teams in rugby, cricket, soccer, athletics and basketball, is a member of the Cricket South Africa and SA Rugby medical committees and the Comrades Marathon Panel of experts, is a medical advisor to the MTN cycling team and Kaizer Chiefs Football Club, founder and Director of Sports Concussion South Africa and serves on tribunals for the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport.

The topic will include discussions around the various measures that students may resort to in order to achieve target weights and enhance performance in sport. This may be done through the use of supplements, the use of which could impact the child’s performance both academically and in the sports field. The supplement industry is less known and therefore the drive to create awareness around the benefits and hazards thereof.

Amongst other issues this talk will address issues such as:

  • As a player, do you know what you’re taking
  • As a parent, do you know the side effects of the supplements you’re purchasing.
  • What combinations can be used to achieve the desired effects in a positive way
  • Gym and supplements and how to achieve a symbiosis

Note that light snacks as well as wine and other drinks will be served on the night.

Please RSVP by email to Redhill.

Chess Lessons for Africa

 19 March 2012
 Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg
 11 Sans Souci Road, Parktown
15h00 - 16h30

Recent studies have shown that chess lessons, especially when designed to encourage the pupil’s ability to work mentally, are advantageous for developing learning abilities and improving social development.

The German Chess Foundation kindly invites you to a first meeting of public and independent primary schools interested in this subject. The meeting will take place on 19 March at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg, 11 Sans Souci Road, Parktown, Johannesburg, at 3.00 p.m.

At this meeting we will share information from recent studies in this field during a pilot project in Satka (Russia) started in 2004 and a project run by the German Chess Foundation at primary schools in Germany, started in the same year.

Primary schools interested in implementing chess lessons can also send teachers to a training course over four days from 2 - 5 April 2012. The course will be presented by two trainers from the international FIDE Academy, also at the premises of the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg.
