School Type: Girls

Epworth was founded in 1898 in the KwaZulu-Natal university city of Pietermaritzburg. Epworth is a Christian independent school with a Methodist ethos providing pre-primary, primary and secondary education through the medium of English.

The climate Epworth creates provides a nurturing, stimulating environment where the pursuit of excellence, development of self-discipline and life-skills, individuality, creativity and divergent thinking are honoured as essential components of a co-operative community.

Epworth is the Pietermaritzburg independent school known for its warm heart, friendly pupils and devoted teachers. It is a place where faith, integrity, courtesy, compassion and service to others permeate our daily lives.

HIGH SCHOOL

The High School offers a broad and balanced academic programme with a wide variety of subject options that can accommodate pupils of varied ability. We offer subjects in the Mathematical, Physical and Biological Sciences, the Humanities and Arts - Fine Art, Speech and Drama, Music and Ballet all have an important place in our curriculum. Pupils write the Independent Examination Board’s Grade 12 national examinations.

Participation in the sporting programme is an integral part of the Epworth Ethos and encourages involvement and the development of personal and social skills. A lovely swimming pool, diving boards, squash courts, gym hall, playing fields and an indoor sports complex comprise the campus-based sports facilities. These resources ensure that the pupils have a wide range of traditional sports from which to choose.

We are one of the top South African girls’ schools in squash. Our pupils are also able to participate in Adventure Sports which include canoeing down our challenging South African waters, ocean paddleskiing and cycling.

The Boarding Establishment’s familiar warmth is fostered by dedicated and interested BE House Mistresses and younger Boarder Mistresses and Boarder Masters, who help to make the hostels wellstructured and comfortable term-time homes
