Epworth was founded in 1898 in the KwaZulu- Natal university city of Pietermaritzburg. Epworth is a Christian independent school with a Methodist ethos providing pre-primary, primary and secondary education through the medium of English.
The climate Epworth creates provides a nurturing, stimulating environment where the pursuit of excellence, development of self-discipline and life-skills, individuality, creativity and divergent thinking are honoured as essential components of a co-operative community.
Epworth is the Pietermaritzburg independent school known for its warm heart, friendly pupils and devoted teachers. It is a place where faith, integrity, courtesy, compassion and service to others permeate our daily lives.
PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Pre-Primary admits learners from 3 years and believes firmly in the value statement “Play is the Foundation for Learning”. This value ensures our teaching is focused on balanced child activity, attending to social, emotional and intellectual needs. We pursue the National Outcomes Based Curriculum and a diverse readiness programme, balanced with time for the children to pursue gross motor activities in our delightful gardens.
The Grade Rs are satellited to Epworth Primary and they daily pursue activities in the Primary School such as music, computers, swimming, ball skills and sports coaching. They also join the Primary School for assembly and Chapel once a week. We offer a happy, safe and loved environment at our school.
PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Primary School offers a balanced education that encourages critical thinking and problem-solving while emphasising the development of basic skills as a foundation for all learning. Children are encouraged to be independent thinkers as this builds selfconfidence and a sense of responsibility; their interpersonal skills are developed as they work together in groups.
Our pupils are offered many opportunities to develop a sense of caring for others; these include our mentor system, in which Grade 7s are paired with Grade 1s; the annual Grade 7 100 km Relay Run which raises funds for chosen charities; the Grade 6 entrepreneurial programme, and the Grade 3 and 4 support of animal welfare groups.
The Primary School curriculum recognises, responds to, nurtures and celebrates the individuality, strength and special creativity inherent in each child. The obvious enjoyment, fulfilment and reward derived by our boys and girls, in the classroom, on the sports field and in boarding reflect the value of our holistic approach to the education of all our children.
