Kearsney College
Kearsney College

School Type: Boys

Kearsney College has a long and proud tradition, offering the finest educational and sporting facilities with progressive teaching and coaching methods. Founded in 1921, initially outside Stanger on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, it moved to the current Botha’s Hill site shortly before the outbreak of World War 2.

Today Kearsney’s 50 ha (125-acre) campus is set in a country atmosphere on the edge of the Valley of a Thousand Hills midway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, a short 35-minute drive from either city in KwaZulu- Natal, South Africa.

The significant advantage of the proximity to Durban allows access to elite and academy facilities for sport, cultural and business facilities and access to relevant specialists. The Durban International Airport is a 40- minute drive from the College.

A special atmosphere has been created by the cumulative influences of boys and staff over more than 80 years. This passionate commitment continues to this day, with its 550 current students being offered boarding and day scholar options.

BOARDING OPTIONS

Boarders are allowed to go home on weekends and return to school on Sunday evening or Monday morning. For boarders remaining on campus over weekends, Housemasters arrange activities or boys may choose simply to enjoy time-out. Day scholars are fully integrated into all aspects of school life including the boarding houses and will be accommodated on the occasions when they would like to stay overnight. In order to assist parents daily bus services are offered to day scholars.

ACADEMICS

The College has an outstanding record of academic achievement – a 100% Matric pass rate and well over 90% Matric Exemption rate has been the norm over many years. State-of-the-art IT facilities, including extensive use of electronic SMART Boards and data projectors in class, play a role in the College’s commitment to excellence in all spheres.

SPORT AND HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS PROGRAMME

Kearsney is serious about sport, with high national rankings in many codes. Professional coaches are employed for training and developing the boys’ skills and fitness. The variety of sports on offer ranges from athletics, basketball, canoeing, cricket, golf, hockey (on Astroturf), rugby, squash, swimming (2 pools – one heated), tennis, to water polo and recreational water sports.

In conjunction with health and fitness professionals, we have developed a Sports High Performance Programme. This incorporates a fully equipped indoor gymnasium and the expertise of biokineticist, nutritionalist, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning coach, sports psychologist and medical professionals.

THE ARTS

Appreciation of the arts is closely woven into the fabric that goes towards the making and growing of each Kearsney boy. The Music Department can boast much success with the choir, orchestra and gumboot dance troupe. The Kearsney College Choir was crowned Choir Olympic Champions in Europe in 2000 and 2004 where it won gold in the Folklore section on each occasion. Boys are offered music, art and drama as a subject up to Matriculation. Several drama and musical productions of the highest calibre are produced each year.

MENTORSHIP

The Mentorship programme pairs senior and junior boys in a mentoring capacity, under the guidance of a tutor who shares time with a small group of boys each morning. This Tutorship programme in turn strengthens relationships between boys and staff.
