"Preparing Children for Life" – what Michael Mount Waldorf School stands for.
OUR BEGINNINGS
Founded in 1960 by a group of dedicated parents, Michael Mount Waldorf School is a mainstream school that focuses on educating the whole child. We provide an age-appropriate, child-centred curriculum, ensuring that our children experience wide-ranging subject matter that gives them a feel for the world in which they live.
Dr Rudolf Steiner founded the first Waldorf School in Stuttgart, Germany in 1919. His intention was to create an education system that provided more than rote learning, one that spoke to a child's whole being. Considered revolutionary at the time, Waldorf Education is even more relevant as we enter the 21st century.
THE HEART RETURNS TO EDUCATION
Children benefit greatly from the security of long-lasting, deep relationships. The Class Teacher and his/her pupils progress through Primary School together. In their journey through High School, students are accompanied by a Class Guardian. This allows confidence, warmth and openness to build between students and Teachers or Guardians, and a spontaneous respect grows and strengthens year by year.
The Waldorf curriculum is an integrated Primary and High School system. Ageappropriate subjects are introduced during the Main Lesson, which takes place in the first two hours of the school day, when the children are at their most attentive. The Main Lesson spans a period of four weeks during which time an in-depth exploration of a topic takes place. The children are given the opportunity to use all of their senses, to feel, think and experience the subject, making it their own.
The pupils’ enthusiasm for learning shows in the quality of their selfmade books that they create for each Main Lesson. Running lessons – such as Maths, English, sport, handwork, the sciences and Eurythmy (a form of movement) – continue through the day, rounding out each child’s experience of its world.
EXAMINATIONS
Since the inception of our High School, our matriculants have achieved a 100% pass rate in the IEB matric exams. Michael Mount Waldorf School graduates are independent, creative, lateral thinkers and, we are proud to say, truly prepared for life.
