Founded in 1902, St Andrew’s School for Girls is situated in Bedfordview in secure, beautiful grounds. It offers an all-round education in a warm and caring environment for girls from Grade 0 – Form 5 for day scholars and boarders. Our co-educational preschool accepts children from 3 months to 5 years.
In line with its holistic approach, St Andrew’s offers diverse sporting and cultural activities and devotes a great deal of attention to the pupils’ personal growth and lifeskills development.
Academic and sporting facilities (such as the new astroturf) are among the best in the country. Support is provided for pupils who need occupational and speech therapy and bridging English. A school psychologist heads the counselling department.
The strong Music Department consists of 2 senior choirs, a junior school choir, a marimba band, a senior school and a junior school orchestra. Tuition in various musical instruments is a popular option.
The Drama Department is extremely active and interhouse and school productions are of an exceptional standard. There is extra Drama offered both in the senior school and the junior school.
Confident communication is encouraged in Debating and Public Speaking. The junior school also offers Chatterbox to grow speaking skills, and Chess, which has proven to be very popular.
The school offers the following sports: rowing, swimming, diving, netball, hockey, athletics, squash, tennis and golf. The modern fitness centre and gym keeps the girls on their toes.
The St Andrew’s Outreach Foundation, Ubambiswano, the school’s social responsibility, started in 1990. Since then, many students have graduated from our Saturday School and have gone on to obtain university degrees.
The mobile library, consisting of more than 10 000 titles, visits 33 schools in Daveyton and Etwatwa. Through generous donations, the school has provided 14 edutainers for these communities to provide pre-school education.
The school has produced consistently high academic results with a 100% pass rate for the 19th consecutive year. Pupils write the IEB matriculation examinations. The junior school offers tuition in all learning areas in the National Curriculum.
In the senior school, subjects are in line with GET requirements. Pupils in the senior forms may study subjects from different learning fields in line with the new FET structure. Pupils also have the opportunity of choosing their own curriculum from a special Life Skills programme.
Tradition forms an integral part of the holistic education at St Andrew’s. It is a Christian school with strong values, and service to the community is a very important aspect of each girl’s life. In the senior school, each girl is encouraged to follow a personal development programme.
Within the House system, girls are grouped into small tutor groups where they receive individual support and nurturing. St Andrew’s School for Girls is committed to a holistic education that meets the needs of each individual.
In addition to this, girls must be equipped to face the everchanging world with confidence and compassion. It is for this reason that our vision is “Skilled for Life”. It is here that pupils are equipped to be able to make their contribution in the world.
